Contour Path from Monks Cowl to Loteni

08 Feb 2015 16:45 #62799 by Garfuncle
Hi,
I am planning a 4 - 5 day hike and am considering hiking from Monks Cowl to Loteni (or Giants Castle) on the contour path.
Does anyone have a GPS track of the contour path and are there security issues camping along the contour path or is that more of an issue at the top of the berg?

Thanks
Garth

Welcome Garth

Your problem is the Injisuthi section, between Ships Prow and Corner Pass. The only paths you'll find in this section drop down to Injisuthi camp and then climb back up to Centenery hut where the contour path resumes.
The only area I'd avoid camping is around the base of Judge Pass but with Centenery hut and Bannerman hut on either side there shouldn't be a reason to camp there

The contour path from Judge Pass to Bannerman Hut is a bit sketchy in places. It gets very high around Corner Pass and then drops almost 300m before Bannerman Hut. Probably easier to find from the north though.

Between Giant's Ridge and Oribi Ridge there is a short section that is hard to follow (actually only the last 200m before Oribi Ridge - it had just been burned when I was there, so perhaps is ok for most of the year).

I have basically done Battle Cave to the top of Taylor's Pass (not in 1 hike, and with the omission of the 2km part from Langies Pass to Bond Pass (an unmarked pass north of Jarding Pass). Most of it is pretty straightforward.

Hi Garth, you don't have to drop down to Injesuthi camp, if you look at the map, from Ships prow pass, the path is vague, but only for about 2km, from there it is not bad. When you get to Old Women stream( cataract valley) follow the path to where you reach a junction(path is clear)......left will take you to Injesuthi camp, straight ahead(more or less) will take you to Grindstone caves, and right will take you on a long loop on the upper contour path (very secluded, great views.Make sure to fill up on water at Old women stream, the next water is a hard slog away, where you cross Old women stream much higher up the valley)This path eventually drops down fairly steeply to a T junction. Left will take you to Grindstone caves, right to Marble baths.Turn right. Once at the baths, follow the path to the crossing of the Injesuthi river. You will get to another T junction.Turn Right towards Battle cave. Now here you have 2 options, you can turn left just after crossing the stream, past Fergys cave to Centenary hut, or carry on past Battle cave to the lower Njesuthi cave. Just before crossing the river at the caves, a very vague( to be kind) path leads up the main spur almost dead ahead. This tough slog will eventually bring you to the contour path extention . Upon reaching the path( very long hill!! no water)turn left, the path from here is very clear, you will walk right underneath the Trojan wall, and lo and behold, about 2km on and 50m down you will see Centenary hut.It is a fairly demanding section, but much better than going through the camp. I have done it many times, it is very secluded, great views!

Lorenzo summed it up well. There is a contour path via Injasuthi, OK.....there is a path, it certainly ain't nowhere near on contour, much more so than the rest of the Berg. The section between Ships Prow and Old Woman Stream (cataract Valley) is not used very often and is as such very vague (or so it was some years ago when we walked there)

I really recommend the upper contour path section via Lower Injasuthi Cave, it is superb to hike, indeed a slog as Lorenzo stated, but splendid still. Lower Injasuthi Cave (do book it in advance, it is very popular although only among st true nature lovers, unlikely to find a nightmare there) is a better overnight spot than Centenary Hut IMO.

Thanks for all the replies. I have ordered maps from Slingsby and am really looking forward to finding the landmarks and paths you have all mentioned.
