You could also go up via the crack - we went up this way with the kids last year (aged 9 and 7) so not too difficult or long. We then came down Mahai falls back to Mahai.

Forgot to mention the time but we left Mahai campsite at about 8am, had an hour break at the lodge for lunch (hamburgers and milkshakes. Hamburgers wasn't a good idea just before starting the decent but the milkshakes were huge and awesome :) ) and were back at the camp before 5pm if I remember correctly. The pace was quite leasurely as we had to slow down the pace for some non hiking family members on the descent.

Hi folks

I am taking a few friends up the Chainladders for my birthday over the weekend, and would like to walk up from RNNP to meet them at Witsieshoek on Friday. The plan is to detour via Ploughman's Kop and Gudu Falls, before heading up Gudu Pass.

How much time would I need to give myself, reckoning in time for photos and a nice sunny lunch somewhere? I will be travelling light, just carrying camera, emergency kit and lunch...

As always, thanks.

Excluding long breaks, it is not that hard to do in 4 hours if you go light. It took me 5 hours with a heavy pack in a not so great state of fitness a few years back. Hike writeup is called "as the crow flies" - I don't have a link offhand.

It is a very long but flat trail, very scenic in places.

Hi,

We are camping at Mahai Restcamp in the next week and I would like to find out whether you can hike all the way from Mahai restcamp to Tugela Falls (summit Amphitheatre via chain ladder route).
If anyone has done this, how many days should we allow for this hike?

Thanks

Hi miadanielb and welcome to VE.

There is a thread specifically on this topic (post was merged with main thread afterwards - link removed), which may already answer your question.

There is also a thread specifically for the Chain Ladder/Amphitheare/Tugela Falls area - if you scroll down to the footer of this page you will see a shortcut link to that thread.

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

Thank you very much!  I will follow the link and read-up on the route.

Hi Miadaniel

Did you hike from Mahai campsite (via chain ladders) to Tugela falls as planned? We are planning to hike it backwards and want to know what route to take from the top (Tugela falls) down to Mahai campsite (is there another route than walking to Witsieshoek lodge first), I've also seen recommendations of hiking to Gudu falls?

I would appreciate your input.
