Hi all
We did a 5 day hike from the 15th of June onwards. My first night was right next to the (frozen) Tugela rivier on the Amphitheatre. I forgot my thermometer, which was a pity, as I have never experienced that coldness while hiking before(well maybe in De Brug in the freestate). I want to know if anyone has any idea what the temperature was that night at that location?
Looking at weather stations, I found -3.8 celcius but it sounds to warm.
Some casual observations ...
by 20:00 on the 15th water in my dixie and firebucket was frozen quite close to solid.(I do consider that the water was probably close to freezing already when I scooped it out of a hole in the ice from the river)
by 01:00 water in my water bottle inside the tent started freezing(I realised the next day that being that close to the river the moisture in the soil was frozen, evident when you scrape the first centimeter of soil and then you see ice in the soil)
My toes touched the tent sail while I was sleeping through my sleeping bag. They where almost completely numb and white when I woke up.
(My hypotheses is that what ever touched the tent sail, and the ground, started freezing))
Next morning all fluids in bottles outside the tent was frozen rock solid.
So either it was -3.8 and the frozen ground aided in my freezing my arse off inside the tent, or it was much colder than -3.8.
Any ideas or does anyone have access to accurate temperature readings?

Hi we where camped close to the stream slightly above the MCS hut at Campsite: 28°45'23.9"S 28°53'20.9"E and it was cold but I have experienced it much worse up there , the weather over that period was awesome with only one night being windy nd actually pushing the tents, I think maybe at the river you may have experienced more wind than where we camped as we where against a rock ledge and the wind coming over our tents..... I never took my Suunto of my wrist to get a exact temp though so I cannot provide actual temps on the night of the 15th, went outside a few times for relief and the moon was full and the viz was amazing......
