Solo camping overnight on top of the escarpment

I'll be coming to Royal Natal on a solo trip in mid November, and had a few questions.

1. Are there any places that rent tent/pad/sleeping bag? I have all of these myself, but this stop will be part of a longer South Africa trip and I won't need camping gear elsewhere and would prefer not to lug it around.
2. I really want to get dawn pictures from the top of the escarpment, and plan to bring my camera gear. How likely am I to encounter issues camping alone up there? Any recommended campsites to minimize the risk?
3. I have three days total, so could potentially do a two-night backpacking trip, vs a one night trip and doing day hikes on the third day. Any recommendations?

I'd prefer not to join a guided hike or a tour, as I'm an experienced hiker and prefer solitude in nature whenever possible.

Hi, solo hiking is not recommended in the berg, so realise the risk you're taking. There has also been instances of petty theft, robbery and assault in the escarpment area of the tugela falls, so if you do go make sure to camp well out of sight (preferably pitching your tent after dark, and DON"T use your headlamp to give your campsite away). You can review the threads (bergwatch) on this forum to check previous incidents.

Camping alone on the Amphi with lots of camera gear is asking for trouble. Other areas are better for such photographs, but more difficult to get to (Injisuthi, Mnweni, etc.). I would consider hiking over to Ifidi caves if you are looking for good photos and more safety (same route as Amphi, just farther). Alternatively, sleeping in Sentinel Cave gives you a better chance to get good photos of the Amphiteatre itself at sunrise from the neck between the Sentinel and the Amphi and other places. Last but not least, I would consider Cathedral Peak. You can hike the standard route up to about 2700m and camp on a flat spot there, just below Bugger Gulley. Spectacular views and safe too. Just be aware that you might have to take all your water.

I would say the section between Easter cave and Cleft peak is great for photography (Cathedral peak area). I think it is quite underrated, and for me the Xeni cutback is spectacular, especially from the top of the Cockade. Also great for sunrise photos. Have been there on a solo hike as well. Only came across two friendly basothos south of the Elephant and maximum walkin of about 16km from either the Organ pipes-Camel route or Mlambonja pass. Of course you can access via Tseketseke or Cockade passes (11km), but a bit steeper and more remote. Still shorter than anything in Mnweni or Injisuthi (min 20km walkin).
Just an average photo taken on a cloudy day:

Hope it helps
