Jacob's Ladder was created by Sabine
Has anyone got photos of Jacob's Ladder going up to Stable Cave?  How difficult is it?

Thanks

It's not difficult at all, its basically a little berg hill with about 120m elevation gain on a good zig zagging path.
It depends where you approach it from though, the walk to the base could be more challenging.

View looking down before it bends right, and the path which follows the firebreak

Thank you Smurfatefrog, that is a great help.  Here is a google earth image:

Is the big zig zag  Jacob's ladder?

Another question:  Which of these two routes is the easier one, the green or the white route?

Here is some amazing art to describe it Sabine
I assume you're going from Monks Cowl to Stable cave area, these are the options.

Walk along the lower "lower" berg contour path that starts around Hlatikhulu forest and Sterkspruit falls
Your first option up is the top of the lower berg is Makhulumane gorge. It has a few little scrambles and minor exposure but nothing drastic. You top out and have a great escarpment view.
Or you could continue along the very rough drawing of the red route and then go up Jacobs Ladder, this route is easier, but much less scenic.

If going up Makhulumane you'd then turn right and have a further option of green (same as your green route) or blue. Green drops down a bit and is less scenic, so I'd definitely choose blue here (it drops down from just above before Stable cave)
You can ignore the other routes not mentioned, some of these were going to pine trees, some bumbling around at night in the mist and rain trying to find 3 Pools cave and some actually going to 3 Pools cave

Thanks, Merv, for that very colourful explanation.  Don't know if you remember, we met at Mnweni a couple of years ago.

We are actually planning to go directly from Drak Sun towards Stable Cave and then to explore more caves further along.

Hi Smurfatefrog, Sabine and the VE Community

I'm very fortunate to have found your post. I'm looking for expert opinions and information please. We are considering a lower berg trip in which we want to introduce a few Hiking newbies to the berg. We initially considered Cathedral Peak area as it is closer to us Gangster Paradise (GP) people, however upon phoning Didima to book Xeni Cave we where told that Ezemvelo has not been opened for overnight organised hiking yet. This send us back to the drawing board and the attached file is the back-up plan we devised.

Please help me out with some information with regards to the Route we are planning:

1. What is the paths like, is it an established footpath or would we need to bundu bash at some points?
2. Would this route be feasible for first time berg hikers?
3. Are there any good camping spots close to Jacobs Ladder or Stable Cave?
4. What is the water situation on this route during September months?
5. Are there any nice POI's close to the route which you would suggest we take a detour for?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Henk
