GPX Files for Northern Berg

I am planning a fast packing trip from the Sentinel car park, up Beacon Buttress then along escarpment for approx 40-50km but not sure where to come down. Are there any ideas and perhaps a GPX track. The idea is to start at 4am in summer and finish late that afternoon/evening.

Are you wanting to end at Sentinel car park?
For that distance you would need to drop down a pass at Mnweni and end down there. Descending Rockeries pass would make the most sense depending on distance

I am not planning on returning to Sentinel. I've been down Rockeries before so know it and was hoping to explore another route down. Is Cathederal peak a bit too far?

Coming down to Cathedral will be around 70/75km. You can either head down the Bell traverse or Mlambonja pass
You would be doing the full Northern Traverse.

Pretty much bang on 60km if you follow the DGT route and come down Mlambonja Pass. But yes, a fair bit further than the 40-50km requirement!

Hi StephenC and welcome to VE.

You can download the track for the Northern Berg Traverse  ,  the Grand Traverse , and the track for the Grand Traverse record route  for ideas on the route along the escarpment.

You can also look at this index page for Northern Berg passes to use as the exit route.

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

What exactly is the difference between the Grand Traverse and Grand Traverse Record Route?

The record route is shorter and has less elevation gain, the normal line follows the escarpment edge and has better views, but is harder. If you have the time and energy, take the non-speed line. But its good to keep the speed line saved, if you're behind schedule or have terrible weather, the Mokhotlong is a great way to catch up a day.
