Please could I ask for some guidance. We are travelling to Lotheni this December and we last went there 8 years ago and so we are wondering about the road conditions.
We are travelling with family and hiring a car in Johannesburg. Currently we have hired the Hyundai Staria as we have 6 passengers and luggage and would just like some advice as to whether we need a 4x4 or not. We have no problems taking it slow but do not want to land up unable to get to our accommodation at Lotheni (Ezemvelo).
The road we are looking to take is the lower Lotheni road from Nottingham road.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks
Jessica

Hi Jessica
The last time I used the road was in March of this year and it was in a good condition. Every time I have used the road over the past few years it has been fine for a normal sedan. There are just two or three spots on the tight switch backs over river crossings where u have to slow down and take it easy. Some parts of the road might be affected if thre is heavy rain, here I am thinking more of the section just before you get to the parks board area as the rain can sometimes can pool. Hope this helps though some may have traveled there more recently.

Hi Jessica
The road is fine for all vehicles and very scenic. We've visited in my wife's Sandero in all conditions.
It can get a bit slippery after very heavy rains but then you can always call Moses at the Lotheni office if you are concerned before leaving. He usually knows the current state of the road.
I'm travelling the road this weekend and will also be there over the end of December. Will give an update.
