Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge alternative

I am looking to take a weekend trip from Joburg.  Leaving on a Friday afternoon, driving to near Witsieshoek Lodge, spending the night and then hiking via the chain ladders to the top of Tugela falls where we will camp. The following morning hike down and return to Joburg.

Where would be good places to stay/camp near Witsieshoek Lodge that are more budget friendly?

Hi There, If you take a slight detour you can camp at golden gate national park(Glen Reenen rest camp) then the next morning drive to sentinel and hike Tugela falls via the chain ladders. Other than that accommodation is very limited in that area.

Hi,

Amphitheater Backpackers is on the way, or alternatively you can sleep over in Sentinel Caves. Theres 2 of them, a few hundred meters before the chainladders. The upper one I found quite decent and it had mor than enough space for 4 hikers. That's the closest you'll get to the top of the escarpment, as well as the cheapest.

Amphi Backpackers is about a 2 hour detour...

If you are happy to  camp, you can camp pretty cheaply at sterkfontein dam, they also have chalets. Its less than an hour from Witsieshoek.

Hi. You can also try staying in Kestell. A few people use it as a cheaper "base". We've stayed at Roes-se-moes a couple of years back. We've also stayed at Twilight Breeze Lodge in Phuthaditjhaba. It's in the township but we felt safe. The accommodation was not the best (was okay), but the convenience made up for it.
