I heard on the radio, and read on the internet, today, that 5 climbers died over the weekend, in attempting to summit (and descend) Everest.

One of our own guys, from Boksburg / Benoni, is currently up there, hoping to summit in the next couple of days!

Sad to hear,but that's what happens when to many people attempt to summit at the same time, there was apparently quite a bottle neck of people trying to get up the Hillary step and by the sound of things they did surcome to altitude sickness.

The authorities do not limit the number of people on the mountain at any given time, which in my opinion will lead to disaster. :thumbsdown:

So that new batch of deaths brings the season's death toll to 11!

A very good website to follow is that of Alan Arnette. His info and updates are very detailed and comprehensive and any proceeds he generates go towards research into Alzheimers. His 2012 updates are here:

Now the climbing on Everest has effectively been closed for this year (from the Nepal side).
Such a sad time for all involved - the Sherpas and their families as well as climbers and their dreams, not to mention the money spent to get there.

My thoughts go with them and their families, and I hope they weren't pushed into a more dangerous situation than was necessary because of some rich type hauling nothing but a trust fund up the mountain...
