Meru Film - Climbing the Shark's Fin

Viking beat me to the punch - rock climbing is what MCSA does best.

You can also look for advice and people to climb with on the website www.climb.co.za - it isn't as friendly or well run as VE, but there are some good people on it who occasionally provide useful advice

If you go to Rock and Ice magazine's website, there is plenty in the way of instructional videos, technical tips and their Weekend Whipper videos are often worth watching. Some of the gear manufacturers also put out training videos, and Youtube is full of videos of top guys like Adam Ondra and Chris Sharma doing what they do best.

Here's the trailer for the DVD King Lines - no mountaineering, just climbing, but I enjoyed it:

The Sharp End is another good one. There are also the annual Reel Rock films which are usually pretty good.

Ps. I'm watching Meru tonight :woohoo:

Well that was pretty good

I had seen the Reel Rock insert on Sharks Fin a few times, so I knew lots of the story already - probably ruined the film for me a bit

It's really motivating to push yourself to a point and then just abit beyond.

All my hikes and trips are child's play compared to this, I am getting an itch to get into climbing now.

Hear hear!
Where do one start though? I'm from Pretoria and were rather deprived of mountains here. Don't know if they do in the Magaliesberg?

I know they do climbing in the Magalaiesberg, but the training I am not sure, intrepid I think should know more..

I have found a few climbing gyms in Pretoria though.

Both the Magaliesberg and the Joburg section of the MCSA are good places to start. They both have regular activities in the Magaliesberg - try both and see what flavour you prefer. Joburg Section does have regular orientation meets for beginners at places like Chosspile (at Hartbeespoort) and Bronkies, which are both sport crags. Sport climbing is limited in the Magalies, but then again Chosspile is pretty good and very popular. There are also the Cableway Crags, though access is not as straightforward as Choss. The other sport climbing venues in the Magalies tend to be hard grades. Magalies is a big trad climbing venue on the other hand and has hundreds of documented routes. Following proper protocols for accessing the kloofs is very important though.

You can also do formal training. Neil Margetts (SA Climbing Academy) and Rob Thomas (School for Mountain Leadership) are Gauteng based and know the Magaliesberg well. They are both excellent instructors. Neil has regular courses running in the Magaliesberg, you can join an existing group, makes it cheaper.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.
