Charts are showing potentially the biggest snowfall in a long time on Sunday through to Tuesday.

I did a three day solo contour path hike at Injisuthi this Monday to Wednesday. The escarpment was shrouded in cloud on Monday, but on Tuesday morning from the ridge between Cataract Valley and Old Woman Stream I could see a light dusting of snow on Mafadi and the ridge behind Injisuthi Summit Cave and Red Wall. Not sure when it snowed, although when I looked at the forecasts on the weekend yr.no was forecasting some snow for Injisuthi Peak (Njesuthi on yr) on Sunday night (which I didn't expect would happen). The snow was not visible on Wednesday when I went over the ridge again, it may have melted, or visibility may just not have been good enough to see it. It could have been hail, but the clouds had cleared by Monday evening, and I doubt if hail would have lasted that long if it had hailed on Sunday night or Monday morning or earlier.

yes Tony...the snow fell Sat/Sun last and is visible on satellite images over the Mafadi-Njesuthi summit region on Mon and Tues last. There was also some over the northern Berg Afriski-Letseng plateau region but that disappeared faster than over Mafadi-Njesuthi.

Always nice that it can snow anytime in the berg.
These from a trip up Cowl Gully in Nov 98.

Wow, nice!
I really wouldn't mind a snow hike later this month!

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

Unless I have the year mixed up, we were up on the escarpment sleeping in Nkosazana Cave, during that same snowfall. It only took 14 years after that snowfall for us to meet and do a Berg trip together!Serious tribe wrote: Always nice that it can snow anytime in the berg.

Pre-digital, I have them in a box somewhere currently inaccessible.
