Snow Watch 2026

Well the event is still 3 days away, and things may change, but for several days virtually all weather models are indicating confidence in a very significant winter system impacting South Africa over Monday-Thursday next week.

It seems there will be no shortage of both cold and moisture, and this could lead to very widespread snowfall over the entire Drakensberg range.  With freezing levels dropping to 1600m at times and possibly even lower, this brings also a good possibility of snow extending far into the midlands as well, and the high lying ground in multiple other provinces.

For the time being snow accumulation totals are looking at around 15-30cm+ for the escarpment.  Most snow falling over Monday and Tuesday.  

The escarpment is expecting a very extended hard freeze with temperatures well below freezing for 4-5 days, and minimum temperatures reaching -10C and some models even suggesting -16C at times for the highest peaks.

 

After an extended period of cloud cover, we finally have a break in the clouds to view the extent of the snowfall.
