Had a look at the view from Murch Point on GE, I see what you guys were saying about Kompasberg, looks like a real stand out peak - a shame its not a 9 summits peak. But I must make an effort to do it some time. Got this pic of it off a google search (no copywrite on the pic):

We found this flag on a cairn to the North of Mafadi in December 2008, obviously from a previously organised attempt. Not sure whether the participants planted it , or had to retrieve it, but either way it was in the wrong place.

Interesting!

Kobus Bresler (the current holder of the overall and individual time record - I have managed to get lots of info from him, definitely a good contact for planning something like this) tells me that the group record is about 8 days and 18 hours (compared to his 8 days 6 hours), but there have been tons of failed attempts, so it could be any of those.

Personally I think its in bad taste for people to plant flags like that, its really just litter - it doesn't prove anything. Also a fail of note when someone climbs the wrong peak on a record attempt

That's why we removed it.

Hi Ghaz
My sister lives in Nieu Bethesda, about 35km from Compass. So every time I visit her I climb the peak.Done it three times now and its an awesome place to be.On solo trips you have this real solitude feeling ,only wild horses is to be seen.
Anyone that's in the area sometime must go for it,its a 5km hike to the base (north)
straight forward scrambling with a few hair raising parts.

From the photos I have seen it looks really worthwhile. I believe its the highest non Drakensberg Peak in SA - but of course Murch Point gets the climb on the 9-summits as its in the Norther Cape. Life is funny sometimes.

Compasberg can be seen from Graaf Reneit, right? I was there in 2003 and noted a rather impressive mountain, but I didn't know what it was. Sadly I didn't get any photos at the time (I had only owned an automatic non-digital camera for a year at the time).

We climbed it (with ccjoubert) about two weeks ago, a real fun outing, think we started at 10:30 and arrived back at the cars at 17:00.
They say on a clear day you can see Cockscomb from there, which is about 250km away.
ghaznavid: no, you can't see it form GRT, but there are some other impressive mountains around the town.

Attached is the .gpx file we recorded for Kompasberg.
Taken from where we left the car, up the to the peak, back down and all the way back to town to our cold beers at the backpackers.

seems it won't attach, will upload it elsewhere.

The Kompasberg GPS data download is now available in the downloads section:
www.vertical-endeavour.com/downloads/viewdownload/24-general/126-kompasberg-gps-data.html

To Francois and Esna who apparently planted the flag on the tall cairn 700m North West of Mafadi's summit: never mind the error of missing the actual summit, this is very unethical and inconsiderate. Please keep this kind of thing off our mountains.

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.
