Cave Etiquette

I'm not sure why people think they can still use that toilet, but they shouldn't. It was a mistake to bother with plumbing and water systems in Berg mountain huts in the first place. They should have built a long drop away from the hut.

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

This post does not fit exaclty into the topic, but the location could be seen as a cave and it certainly involves etiquette. We spotted this group camped under the large boulders in the river bed at Injesuthi just below the junction with the river that leads to Marble baths. Besides being camped in a rather danderous spot right in a river bed, I have seen those boulders completely surrounded by floodwaters before, they had a roaring camp fire going, with a good stockpile of firewood, right behind the tents (not such a good idea either to make a fire right bext to a nylon tent). Witchiwoo, who has the loudest voice in the group, shouted down to them that fires were definetly not permitted in the reserve. Once they saw the camera trained on them thay put it out. We did report them to the camp manager who said he would take it up with them when they returned. Oh and they were also camped within the 3 km "no camping zone "

Good job Diverian and Witchiwoo.

I hope these campers realize that you are actually doing them and those alike a favor by reporting this. It is indeed a lovely spot next to the river for an afternoon lunch break or such (although a bit far down from the standard path), but camping there, you gotta be really ignorant to your surroundings. This area is almost similar to Junction Cave a little further up the Buttress Fork stream, basically on the river plain and indeed a very dangerous a place to be in summer.

It seems that fire making in caves is fast becoming the norm. There were two recenly used "fireplaces" in Lower Injasuti Cave.

That first LIC fire spot was there at least a month ago, Don't remember seeing a second.
We picked up a bit of litter in the cave too.

I would like to believe that there is enough consensus on this forum against this kind of thing that we can counter balance it. We can do this by encouraging others not to do this, by doing clean-ups and by reporting it as much as possible.

I totally agree with all you've posted. I too have had the same experience when spending nights in caves, also cleaning up, in one case remains of a fire made by the previous hikers the night before...

My views on toilet etiquette in Drakensberg Wilderness may be considered a little controversial by some - but perhaps not so controversial if considered in the light of the principals of MINIMUM IMPACT.

Digging holes is not necessarily such a good idea as it disturbs fragile plant and other life forms and can contribute to erosion. Essentially what we produce as humans is not much different to what baboons and other animals produce that defecate more or less anywhere. If what we produce is exposed to air, sun, wind, rain, dung beetles and other insects, it decomposes very quickly. So my advice to clients is to LEAVE NO TRACE. Anyone coming behind you should not be able to see you have been there.

Defecate well away from paths, water courses, streams and rivers, preferably in open areas exposed to the elements. Cover your deposit with a large rock. But GET RID OF THE TOILET PAPER! Most times of the year it is safe to burn toilet paper, or if you chose your place carefully (such as in an area that has already been burnt off), the surrounding grass is wet with dew (early morning) and use simple common sense, the risks are minimal. If in doubt, toilet paper (and so called 'female hygiene products' for that matter) should be placed in a ziplock bag (one inside the other if necessary :-))And carried out with your rubbish.

So defecating in protected areas (under cave overhangs for example)is a no-no.

And be careful when lifting large rocks - there may be a snake underneath! ;-)
