Still digging, but so far I did check with John Hone: he passed on the name "Five Star", for the lower cave, to the new map-makers, which had been passed onto him by a hiking companion.
Interesting that even among the Mnweni guides, there are those that refer to the upper one as Five Star. Still trying to understand where this difference comes from. My impression is currently that if you had to take a vote among hikers, the bottom cave would win. Will keep you updated.

Getting back to an old thread, I recently spoke to one of the locals living in the Mwneni who was very knowledgeable of the area. According to him the lower cave is Five Star Cave. The upper one is apparently called Mbundini 1. There is a "Mbundini 2" nearby too. These are not to be confused to with the Mbundini Cave near the top of Mbundini Pass.
In view of the above as well as the fact that a majority seem to hold the lower cave to be Five Star Cave, I propose we settle the matter and agree that the bottom one is Five Star and that the top one is "Mbundini 1".

Can anyone give me the co-ordinates for this cave. I think it is the mweni somewhere.
I can view the download gps data set on this site as my mac does not seem to like them for some reason and won't open the file.

Actually, I need to update that file, because that cave is none other than 5 Star Cave! I doubt you need co-ordinates for that?
Dagga Planter's Cave is just a silly name I came up with when I created that data file years ago, when I believed 5 Star Cave was the upper one, and that the lower one was basically nameless - and the hiking maps had the same error. Somewhere on this forum is a thread with all that discussion on it (will look for it later), since there are definitely differences of opinion as to which cave is 5 Star. I believe we have solved the debate: 5 Star cave is the lower one, and the upper one is actually called "Mbundini 2". This is confirmed by the Mnweni guides and other gurus on the area.

Thanx Chris. 5 Star Cave, right. Know of it, never walked into it, have seen pics of it. Cant see why they call it 5 star cave, unless ones food is miraculously cooked and served to tired hikers.
