So is anybody else hitting the Berg this weekend? We're doing the Mnweni-Rockeries thing and it's actually been about 2 years since I had a good old overnight hike in the berg...
Can't wait!
So how about a straw poll: Which cave do you prefer - Ledger's or Mponjwane? For me it's Ledger's. I have stayed in Mponj once before and the view is certainly better but there's something about scrambling down that gully and being perched right on the edge of the escarpment that keeps me going back to Ledger's, especially if there are berg-newbies in the group!

Stijn's provocation has the makings of a Toyota-Land Rover debate! OK, here goes. I added up the number of nights I've spent in Mponj cave over the years and its now more than a month's worth. Ledgers - yet to stay for longer than tea. Actually, we came close once afer figthing our way over in bad weather from Icidi, but it almost felt disloyal to stay on, and without any discussion we were soon labouring up the slope to Mponj not helped by the kilos of water on board. So where's the objectivity in this lot, a better sunrise maybe?

I'm doing the Mnweni / Rockeries loop over easter. Will be my first time in Mnweni area. Not too sure which cave to go for.......
Do the locals use both of them?

As far as I know, neither gets used by locals. I've actually never seen Basotho lurking anywhere near either cave, even though both passes are quite popular.
@mnt_tiska:
I'll give you the better sunrise. In fact, the best sunrise I have ever seen is from that little outcrop above Mponj Cave. Sea of clouds at about 2000m stretching to the horizon, with the cathedral range, mponj and the eastern butress rising out of the clouds like islands. We all just sat there in silence for about an hour, completely gobsmacked by the scene...

I was meant to be doing pholela and gxalingenwa as part of a springbok scout hike, but the guys rugby coach refused to let him off for one game, saying if he chose scouts over rugby, he would never play for the first team again.
What a prick.

Great discussion guys!
The view from Ledgers is something else...the valleys below have a kind of "telephoto" effect (for lack of a better word), and the exposure of the cave makes the view feel even more "in your face". Mponj I love for its classic association with Mponj peak, its spectacular sunrise views over the Cathedral Range, and its cosy feel. I think both are classic caves and I use both depending on the mood.
For a more technical comparison:
* Ledgers has a better water supply
* Mponj is an uphill slog to get to, Ledgers is an easier walk, though a little far
* Mponj seems to offer better shelter (Ledgers is a shallower overhang and I've felt a little out in the open at times during stormy and windy nights)
* Mponj can sleep more people (have seen it take more than 10 people on more than one occasion)
* for people who don't like exposure, the access to Ledgers can be an issue.
@Stijn: agree, the Basuths don't seem to hang around either cave much, though I have seen animal dung close by from grazing activities. The smugglers don't seem to have much use for them - too far away from the route.
Was looking for some ideas on a new poll - Ledgers vs Mponj is a great one - see bottom of each page to cast your vote!

So the hike was fantastic with some pretty good weather to boot
The bundubash slog up the final hill to 5-star cave is a little longer than I had remembered it!
And of course it was a popular weekend. There were 3 school groups (all from the same school I believe) who set up a tent city (about 20-30 tents in total!) about 100m from the top of Mnweni Pass. You have to question the soundness of that idea with the drug smuggling activity the pass is known for.
Anyway, we had Ledger's Cave and the sunrise to ourselves the next morning
Man I really should get back to the berg more often!

Hey Stijn
post us some of your photos!
cant believe they allow such big groups up there, in such a remote area, cant be good for the environment!

It so happened that we unexpectedly spent a night in Mponj Cave on the Easter weekend after this discussion started. First off, for the first time I saw fresh evidence that the Basotho shepherds had used it. Fresh animal dung all around the cave, a fireplace, a crude lantern suspended from the roof, left over food and the usual litter. Its the worst condition I've seen the cave in.

Secondly, that night we had very heavy downpours of rain. Occasional gusts of wind blew rain in from the one side (which one of my buddies bravely endured), but the worst was that there was so much dripping and raining at the entrance of the cave that it funneled in the water along the floor which progressively flooded over half the cave! There was some shuffling and relocation of hikers and gear, needles to say. Good thing I'm already a firm believer in solid sheets of plastic which I use to sit out storms out in the open, and as waterproof groundsheets! So, it wasn't the best cave experience, especially for one such Mponj. But I still love this cave and all the others. Just good reminders and lessons learned!
PS: we had little time to spend at the cave but did clean up a little bit. Anyone heading up there is encouraged to continue cleaning it up.
