Please tell me, how far is the water from Mponjwane cave? And also, in case the cave is occupied, how far away can one find suitable flat camping spots close to water?

Obviously dependent on recent rains, but generally about 1km, but 150m/200m lower than the cave. Please tell me, how far is the water from Mponjwane cave? And also, in case the cave is occupied, how far away can one find suitable flat camping spots close to water?

Hi Swordfish,
The water is just below the cave, to the west. Simply walk towards the top of Mnweni pass, you will find a few streams to the NW at the lowest spot on the plateu. A few meters to the north from the stream (i.e. towards Ledges cave), in the ridge section, are some nice pools that, depending on water levels, are probably easier to get water from. I prefer to fill up at this spot as it is a bit elevated meaning better views and less climbing over the rock band on the way to Ledges cave.

If you use Rockeries Pass to go up to Mponjwane Cave, this time of year there will be a strong drip/flow near the top of Rockeries Pass where you can collect water before going up to Mponjwane Cave. It is about 200 m to the north of the top of the pass, at the same level more or less as the top of the pass, and is where water collecting above a rock band flows out where the rock band ends in cliffs at the escarpment.
There are also some camping spots close to the stream for water, if you head from the top of Rockeries Pass to the west, as if you were heading directly towards the top of Mnweni Pass, not too far down from the top of Rockeries Pass.

I prefer Mponjwane due to the sunrise, and also the views when approaching along the escarpment edge from the north!
Some views from this last weekend
Sad to see quite a bit of graffiti on the walls though

Man, that is beautiful!!!!
My wife took this pic of me last year winter (Jul 2023) and it shows the views about say 70m from the cave just as you round the corner on the final approach to the cave. This is the sunset view to the south. I had a print made of this one (1200mm x 55mm) to remind me every day of how beautiful the Berg is.

Thought i would add to this thread that the last time i stayed over in Mponjwane there was a doormouse (microsquirrel) resident in the rock wall of the cave. These are super cute creatures and it entertained us endlessly during the evening. I was quite surprised to see it a doormice on the escarpment as they are considered to inhabit "woodlands". In any event this is definately a plus for Mponjwane in mt book, has anyone else seen a doormouse on the escarpment?

I did a hike with Chris in 2012, and we had a dormouse in Fangs Pass cave which was investigating our supplies. I have added two of his images as I am sure he won't object.
