Another good reason to get the conservation aspect of the Mweni's High Berg under KZN Wildlife management. Also, to access the Mweni escarpment one would have to cross the Khubedu valley, and not simply drive along ridges. Many 4x4 enthusiasts will know that crossing wetlands causes very serious environmental damage, as well as being tricky to navigate because of the bogs.

The letter by Stephen Richert, Conservation Manager, Royal Natal National Park, can now be viewed on this site:

Hey guys

Found the news on climb.co.za - the 4x4 perpetrators are back, it seems:
Thread on climb.co.za

It will be difficult to enforce the rule of no vehicles up there, but there must be SOMETHING we can do. Has anyone here ever encountered a vehicle on the escarpment?

That is utter disrespect of our enviroment!
If you read the previous discussion on climb.co.za (Drakensberg World Hertiage Site)it shows a letter sent to the 4x4 community in regard to this matter and that any unauthorised vehicular access is in contravention of the law.

Thanks for the update gollum. I've joined the other thread and also requested specifics of where exactly the pic was taken.

If they are driving on the old bridle path over the Lekhalo-la-Namahadi they are technically not breaking laws they can be prosecuted for, but as soon as they walk (or drive) from there over the boundary near the falls, then its an illegal entry in the the UDP-WHS. Cant quite make out from the pics if they are on the plains of the Khubedu or on the Namahadi Pass side.

As soon as I have more detail on the location, I'll pass it on to KZN Wildlife, Bergwatch and the MCSA.

PS: I've merged this with the previous thread on this topic. See also this:

These latest pics are around the source of Tugela.

Cyndi Jonker from Bergwatch reckons this is happening regularly, and its just because of the burnt grass that it is now visible. They come over the ridge between Mt-Aux-Sources running towards the Lekhalo-la-Namahadi, over the ridge behind Crows Nest and down into the Bilanjil valley to the escarpment edge.

KZN Wildlife have been informed and will investigate.

Based on the reply from EKZN, it appears that these individuals can be prosecuted.

Heros must boast, and fortunately do so by posting pictures of their exploits on their websites. It is my observation that most of thes pictures include number plates and full face shots of smiling ignorami.

I am fairly certain that photographic evidence, as well as written accounts, are evidence enough.

@intrepid: Ack, sorry for causing you trouble! I should have simply continued this thread. Thanks for the merge, though.

@st2: Good idea! I'll have my staff at Google keep their eyes peeled for evidence :P pretty sure we will find something...

@gollum: no hassle at all, just my call as a moderator. Any case its much more important to use the forum frequently and freely than worry about what thread may or may not already exist.

Ja, go for it guys, send any reports to Stephen Richerts (manager of RNNP - see contact details here ), especially if you are on the Amphitheatre at the time. I got a similar reply from him yesterday to the one on ClimbZA.

We could also start a Facebook campaign to spread awareness?
