MINIMUM Temperatures. was created by SeriousTribe2
Over the years we have carried with us Digital Thermometres, which we have used to record minimum / maximum temps, and also keep an eye on onset of snow.
Would be interested in feedback from those who have done the same i.t.o MINIMUM temps.
Our coldest recorded was in July 97 at the top of Leslies Pass @ -21.
Putting it out there.

I remember once once as a school boy, we were hiking in July on top of Amthitheatre and camped close to the guard hut, people staying right at the hut told us that they recorded -18 on their min max thermometer. All I could remember is that that night we were freezing even with all our cloths on.

@ Jonwells
We were kitted. Although it was one time I used a fleece liner inside my bag.
The temp was recorded in the bell of the tent.
The wind blew so hard from the south in the night that sheets of ice were being blown downriver, smashing as they went.
We were camped pretty much at river level on an icefield, so lowest point being colder, i guess we were in the right spot.
There was thick snow on all slopes.
The Thermos were not in the wind so temp was ambient.

@JonWells
@st2
ST2 forgets that i was bloody freezing that night, that because as usual, come hell or high water he manages to sleep through everything, and did not hear me moaning about the cold. That was without a doubt the coldest night i have ever spent in the mountains, and i did not sleep very much for the shivering.
I did not have a cowl sleeping bag so was loosing a lot of heat through my upper body area. That was the first thing that i bought when i got back to civilization, and it certainly is the way to go,ST2 gave a very good breakdown of sleeping bags recently which are the things to look out for in a bag.
It was so cold, that the candle in the tent was not melting down at a level rate, only the core of the candle was melting, and leaving the outside, almost like a sheath for a small distance above the flame. My boots and my water bottle froze solid.

Never really had a thermometer along much. Did have a cheap little one about a month ago which insisted that it was -15 deg C. I think the coldest officially recorded temp for the region is at -20 point something.

Yea I've also only heard -20°C as the coldest temp in the Drakensberg , so Serious Tribe you could have the record so far!
Any volunteers to spend a night on Thabana Ntlenyana during the next major cold front?

also been on top of amphitheatre in mid June, rock hard frozen ground, iced up Tugela falls, and hit at least -15 degrees.
We had a thermo out in the afternoon, and it was already 0 degress with the sun up, as the sun set we watched as the temp plummeted in minutes to -5 , then a while after that -10, next morning we checked lowest temp recorded on the thermo of -15.
