Jeepers, I thought I had achieved something by surviving a -10°C in June, now I have to go camping at Oxbow!

Thanks Intrepid

Oxbow does seem to be the place for Lesotho's extremes - rainfall included.
I found reference to a -21 minimum on the page below.
As I have absolutely no idea how to say " I found reference to -21 in the link here", I just had to copy and paste viz. below:

Look for this little icon

This image is hidden for guests.

in the toolbar directly above the message box when you write a post. Make sure the cursor is at the spot where you want to insert the text then click on the icon and 2 fields will appear, one for the link, the other for text which will represent the link. Fill these in, click on Insert and you're done!

-21C must be quite cold! The coldest I've had was -10.5 when we went to sleep (+-20:00 or so) - not too sure what it went down to in early morning hours though.

I've also had my water bottle freeze inside the tent 2 or so times, but not solid like in deep freeze. Only to the extent that if you hit it with something & make a hole in the top you can still drink ;-)

Last year when I bought my Ice Breaker (lovely bag!) I slept outside of the house & the weather channel predicted -8 . Now that's "normal" minimums in bethlehem area & we are living outside of town. +- at 00:00 when I went outside I measured -7.5 already. Also the thermometer I've measured with is a (stolen) science class therm, so it doesn't record the lowest, you gotta see it when it happens. Next morning I woke up few minutes after 07:00 with frost all over my bag, but I was warm inside. First ascent was really humble when they labelled their bags.

Any ideas where you can get a compact digital type thermometer suitable for hiking ? My old "off road" Nokia, the type in the waterproof housing, had a built in thermometer which was brilliant for hiking but sadly that died some years ago.

I've been unable to find a quality digital thermometer, but Game does sell digital thermometers in the Car section, but they generally only last about 2 years. Also some Tobacconists often stock them for some reason!

The official coldest temperature recorded in Africa is −23.9 °C
Ifrane, Morocco. I'm sure this can be beaten!

@jonwells

I'm sure it has been beaten mate.

It's kinda like Miss Universe - she sure as nuts isn't the most beautiful babe on the planet, she was just there at the time, and the one that really counted was somewhere else !

:woohoo:

I was just wandeing would you guys be measuring mean temp,or would you
Be adding in wind chill factor.
Thid would drastically change the temp rating
I have experienced tempetues of -18 then when you add wind chill
The temp dopped to -32 and yes this was in the drakensberg 2006
@ tiffendell ski resort in the eastern cape
I had a thermo flask full of hot water beside me in a ice wolf s/b
Wearing a extreme alpine glacier jacket two beanise and all my thermal
Socks and when I woke about 3 am I was royal blue in colour and the bottle
Of hot water frooze solid and all I wanted to make was hot chocklate.
This is the most uncomfortable I have ever being, but loved every second

I suppose though with the resorrts capabilities of making snow this would
Add to the colder tempretures ,but having the spiit of adventure will always
Allure me to challenge the elements.

Cold weather is best
