Passport situation? was created by Geordie
Hi all.
We want to hike from Giants Castle to Sani top, where we will be collected to return home via Sani pass in a vehicle. How do the SA and Lesotho authoroties view the fact that we would be trying to leave Lesotho, without having been stamped in.
Regards
George C

They don't like it. Chances are they will let you proceed, but I don't know what would happen if you get an official in a bad mood.
I once had 2 people drop out of a Grand Traverse at Sani. They had their passports but the official was not happy that they didn't have an entry stamp. He gave them an earful and then let them proceed.
We once used Monantsa Pass (which has a SA border post, but no Lesotho counterpart) and took our chances by exiting at Caledonspoort. We we explained we had entered via Monantsa, they sighed and were mildly irritated, told us not to use that way again, and ushered us through without stamping anything in our passports.

I've never seen anyone at the "gate" checking passports are stamped though. They would have no idea if you just climbed in a car & drove out.
Can say for the same for the Maputsoe / Ficksburg border actually, I've been through there about 50 times and not once have they asked to see my stamp
Only once though did I take a chance & not stamp out, but when I went back a few months later the woman was quite observant & noticed I hadn't stamped out, had to go inside, apologise & promise not to do it again

@Geordie, Theoretically you could have walked along the watershed and not left SA at all thus not requiring a passport. The fact that the border post is not at the border denies you your constitutional right to travel on a section of South African Road,to the border, unless you have a passport.

Ja well no fine
These were the kind of answers I was expecting. The trouble with incompleate stamps in your passport is that they catch you out at some other, usually inconvienient, time.
We intend leaving a vehicle at Sani top, which means that you now have to explain how you walked to sani top and now you are suddenly a driver.
Perhaps we should leave the vehicles at the bottom and use the Sani tours busses. I'm not sure that you need a passport to use them.
I have been through Bushmens post twice with no problems. The cop there is adament that if you did not get stamped in, you don't need to get stamped out, but Sani with two border posts and vehicles will be a challange.
I just thought that ther may be an official take on the matter.
Just thought about something. I also had a Grand Traverse dropout at Sani and I never thought to ask her how she got through.. I will report back when I find out.

You could also say you came in the Maseru border, they just scan there now, and I doubt Sani has any ability to check that, one hell of a long walk though

Good to know that Smurfatefrog is so eithical! Lol, joys of border posts...
I was almost stuck in Kuwait with an expired passport a few years ago, in the end we got onto an earlier flight (which was fully booked until the last week) and I got back to SA the day before it expired...
