Dakota crash site was created by Geordie
Hi again
We should be passing very close to this site next week end and would appreciate the co ords just to pass by and pay respects.
Any other info would be appreciated, we are basically strolling from Giants pass top to Bannermans with Durnfords as an option.
I am happy to receive a pm on this one if it's considered sensitive.

Regards G

Replied by Geordie on topic Dakota crash site
I had a meeting with Colonel Steve Gardiner earlier today.
He is the Air Force director of aviation safety and I popped in to hand over the pair of glasses which I found on the crash site. He was very happy to speak quite openly about the incident and put a few facts straight.

Firstly, there was no pillage of the crash site by locals before the wreckage was located, and there were armed guards installed shortly afterwards so the site remained under guard until it was cleaned up.

The kite was coming in in south bound. (Overhead Giants resort, towards Lesotho)

It was not a matter of a few meters as I initially thought. Closer to 20 actually m, as the nose just cleared the Long Wall sharp edge but the lip of the cliff tore off the pitot tubes (air speed instrumentation) and ripped the belly open. It then proceeded up the rise and cartwheeled.

They still have absolutely no idea of what actually went wrong except that they should have been a hell of a lot higher at the time.

The site has been officially cleared and is not classified or out of bounds in any way. All they ask is that if we do pick up anything at the site which may be personal or which may assist them in the incident investigation, to please hand it in.

There is also a cairn in the making, so add to it if you pass by to honour the memory of these poor souls.
