Tall waterfalls in the Berg
On Google Earth I've seen what look like two MASSIVELY tall waterfalls near one another - I think one os the Champagne Falls I refer to above, at co-ordinates:
29'5'5 South by 29'20'1 East and
29'4'6' South by 29'18'36 East
Now, I figure some of these may not be counted because they may freeze in winter - but I still think they should be documented cos after rains they're awesome to see. Tugela's still the King - but we should list the Princes! Has anyone got a list of other mega-tall falls? I figure there are plenty in the Berg.

It was surveyed in the expectation that it was the longest single drop of any waterfall in Africa (Tugela has at least 3 stages).
Hilton Pass is the closest 'pass'.

Here are the falls at Red Wall

- Tugela at 948m (rank 2)
- Didima/Witch Falls 600m (rank 15th)
Other ones I know of that are rather impressive:
- Eland River Falls by the chain ladders (probably only about 120m)
- Bilanjil Falls (Amphitheatre), probably about 500m
- Ribbon Falls (Amphitheatre), probably about 500m
- Nkososana Falls (Vultures Retreat/Dragon's Back area), the visible part from the top is small (probably about 50m), but I imagine it keeps going below what is visible from the top
- Mhlwazini/Champagne Falls (in the cut back by Monk's Cowl) - probably around 800m in its entirety, but the falls are broken in numerous spots
- Bannerman Falls (seasonal though, only in summer or after rain), probably around 300m
- Rhino Falls (only seen it in operation once - December last year, but it hadn't properly rained in the last 24 hours) - that was probably around 250m before it reaches Mashai Pass
David Bristow (in his book Been There Done That) claims that Namahadi Falls is the 2nd highest in SA, but I don't know anything about that waterfall.

From the topographic maps, Bilanjil and Ribbon are WAY over 500m. In fact, they're not that much shorter than Tugela itself.
So the mega-tall waterfalls that people are speaking about so far are:
Tugela (Obviously)
Ndedema / Witch
Bilanjil
Ribbon
Mhlwazini/Champagne Falls
Namahadi (no info on it though, so no idea of height)
and Red Wall (which Google Earth would suggest is a bit over 600m).
So all of those are likely 600m / 2000 feet or more. Why is more not made of this from an international tourism point of view?
People know to come see Tugela as world number 2, but if folks knew that hiking on the top of the Escarpment could yield over a half dozen waterfalls of such height, it would have a few people coming. It's a fairly big hobby for some people, and it's usually HARD to get to waterfalls of such height. Being able to walk past and ABOVE so many is almost certainly unique world-over.
ps: is the fall I attach a picture to the Mhlwazini/Champagne Falls you refer to?
I presume so. It's the picture on page 77 of EWTD mentioned originally...

That has me a bit stumped too currently...Ive been to Namahadi area a couple times. Perhaps he is meaning Elands River Falls, since this all becomes the Namahadi anyway?ghaznavid wrote: David Bristow (in his book Been There Done That) claims that Namahadi Falls is the 2nd highest in SA, but I don't know anything about that waterfall.
Yep its two.alext wrote: That looks like two falls coming off Red Wall?
Interesting yes, a fresh way of looking at the Berg. Why don't we nurture this thread, define all the waterfalls, photograph them and compile an article that features them?alext wrote: Why is more not made of this from an international tourism point of view?
Note to Serious tribe: this would make a great photo comp theme.
Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.
