Hi Alex
The picture is near the top of Sani Pass with lots of sharp turns; lower down there are not so many turns but the road is very steep and rough, and there the problem is ground clearance and traction (tyre grip). Because the top of the pass is in a gulley (valley) the road becomes a river and gets washed away when it rains.

The roads from Winterton to Cathedral Peak Hotel and Estcourt to Monks Cowl are tarred roads but have potholes; some parts are better than others, and as intrepid said, the road to Injasuti is not in good condition, so best avoided at night.

We drove the Mooi River - NH Road - Vergelegen - Sani Pass Hotel on Thursday. Scenic and fine, but I won't attempt with a sedan. (Possible but I won't.)

Won't attempt Sani in the wet with a sedan either. Went up there on Friday (misty and wet) and on Sat (by foot :P ) Top 5 km or so might give you issues if conditions are poor, especially to pull away if you need to stop for another vehicle. Do you require a GPX of the pass?

Attaching pics of the upper stretches.

Hi Andrew,
i need your help. I don't arrive to get distance and road conditions.
I'm in Mooi River and i drive to Glengarry Kamberg, about 40/45 km, and then i gonna see if i can go uo to Highmoor.
Then i'd like to take from Glengarry Kamberg the Mpofana road till the Lotheni Road, and then instead to go south to Stepmore, Himeville, Underberg, turn left to north/east to Nottingham Road.
How many km from Glengarry Kamberg to Nottingham Road, and the Mpofana Road is driveable.
So i'll drive the follow day to Underberg on a pavel road through Boston and Bulwer, i'll drive a part of my Nottingham Road (yours and right Lotheni Road) and i don't drive in the (i suppose looking at google earth) worst part around Stepmore and from Stepmore to Himeville).
Advanced thanks
Alex

Having to choose (not enough time) between Garden Castle (up Underberg) and Cobham (up Himeville) which is the best and the easier and closer to reach ?

Hi Alex,

I think this is the information you are asking for:

Mooi River to Glengarry Kamberg: 42km (40min) on R103. I do not know the condition of this road.

Glengarry Kamberg to Highmoor EKZNW: 10.6km (20min) I do not know the condition of this road.

Glengarry Kamberg to Himeville via Mpofana road, Lotheni Road and Stepmore: 85km (1hr50). I do not know the condition of the Mpofana road; the rest of this route is what intrepid & I know as the ‘Lotheni Road’ and is gravel (not tarred), can be difficult in summer when wet or after rain.

Himeville to Nottingham Road via Underberg, Bulwer, Boston, Howick: 157km (1hr50). This road is tarred and in good condition but beware in mist/rain as there could be slow moving forestry/farm traffic and stray animals (goats, cows).

From Himeville, Garden Castle (39km/47min) will provide more dramatic views of the mountains, Cobham (14km/25min) is easier to get to and good for easy walking.

Hope this helps. Anyone with more info (especially road conditions) feel free to correct/add.

Mooi River to Glengarry Kamberg: 42km (40min) on R103. decent tar road with quite a few potholes

Glengarry Kamberg to Highmoor EKZNW: 10.6km (20min) 8km good dirt road, and the last 4km from the gate to the camp is good tar road with the odd pothole.

I agree with Andrew on Garden Castle giving much better views than Cobham.
The parking lot at Garden Castle is about 6km from the escarpment, Cobham is over 13km

Thanks a lot andrew.
But my plan is not to go to Himeville from Kamberg, just take the Mpofana road to reach the Lotheni road and then turn left back (north/east) to Nottingham.
Just for not having to drive on the same road back from Kamberg.
I haven't see anything else between the Lotheni road and the Mooi River-Kamberg road.
thanks
Alex

Hi Sole. I take it you are staying at Glengarry. The road from Glengarry to the Lotheni road is dirt and will be fine for a sedan (drive slow)...also a very scenic drive. When you get to the Lotheni road you take a left turn all the way to Notts on tar ( the occasional pot hole) From Mooi River I would take the R103 to Rosetta and take the Kamberg Road to Glengarry (one of the most beautiful farming valleys in KZN...careful potholes)...take care :)

A gravel (untarred road) that is usable by normal road car.

how many kms on this Mpofana rd till Lotheni rd ?

Glengarry to Mpofana/Lotheni Rd junction: 20km (27min)
Mpofana/Lotheni Rd junction to Nottingham Road: 29km (32min)

Hope this helps.
