Cool... that will work.
Just don't close that vent / door top all the way.
With the walls coming right down to the ground a build up of CO2 is a danger.

Very happy with my Hilleberg Nallo 3. Also fairly lightweigt for a 3 man tent at 2,7kg everything included (1,6m x 2,2m).
As Ian mentioned, a bit noisy in heavy wind but that is generally only when the guy ropes go slack (good indication that you need to go outside and re-tention). I bought a set of 30cm long pegs and after that no more getting up at night, the standard 15cm pegs are pretty much useless in the berg. Found that out the first time in heavy wind at Centenary hut. Very loose and soft ground so the pegs pulled out. Have since also learned to pack rocks on top of the pegs - you can find these basically everywhere :-)

My main gripe with this tent is that you can't pitch it on rocky ground (ok, you can buy special titanium rock pegs but who's going to realistically do that) so pitching in a cave (or overhang) if it gets wet is an issue. Unless you again use rocks to tighten the guy ropes. Easy solution is then to take a bivvy bag along. Decided to try the bivvy bag/tarp combination on my Injasuthi hike in 3 weeks time. 2 bivvies and tarp weighing in at 1,5kg so much lighter and nearly the same amount of protection, but more versatile. I think...... :-)

Is R31 449.63 the price? My goodness that is steep. Looks like an error on the website:
shop.touratech.co.za/tent-hilleberg-nallo-3-gt.html

EBay has them on for $825.

Anyway, if that thirty one grand price is right, then you might as well look at the Mutha Hubba for R14 000. You are most welcome to look at mine Gerhard - it's lying in my garage right now as I've been too lazy to pack it away. Light and comfy. (edit: by comfy I mean roomy for 2 people with hiking gear) My wife gave it the thumbs up too

Interesting, are you intending to use that as your only shelter, or just for wet weather in a cave or overhang? That's what i have used bivy and tarp for...

Ya Adrian, those prices are hugely excessive. I didn't check it out now, seen it before, but a footprint in excess of 2k? I would love to get a Hilleberg Unna, but just no ways I could afford it (well, justify it) at those prices.

To add to/ditto what others have said about tunnel tents, my experience with them has been limited to the Hilleberg Nallo GT. Really strong design and thus far I haven't really come across anything that beats the "space to weight" ratio - for what it weighs and how much space it offers, its unbelievable. I suspect the above 2 points also have a lot do with Hilleberg in particular. Yes they are expensive tents but will survive very serious mountain weather and last a long time. Mine is 13 years old and counting, and has been used a lot.

They are rather noisy in wind, to agree with others. And yes, small camp spots and rocky ground can be a challenge - for example small spots among the boulders in river beds at the base of a Berg Pass, and on steep rocky terrain in general - depending on the trip I mayprefer to take my geodesic type tent. Tunnel tents need a lot of good pegs and mine in particular is a rather long tent. To get the tension perfect can also get rather fiddly. I carry nylon rope extensions for the guy ropes so that I can sling them around bigger rocks and boulders if I can't get pegs in. In thick snow conditions its easy to build a proper platform, even on steep slopes and the added bonus is that you can dig out the vestibule section for more space and for easier sitting and cooking (not really a scenario for South Africa however).

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

Thanks for the inputs all. The tent i had in mind i saw afterwards is not strictly a tunnel but rather a single pole design. But similar principles probably apply in terms of setting up. Will consider both when i finally go buy the tent

R31k definitely sounds wrong. Think I paid about R9k 4 years ago from the local importer, which was not Touratech. As a side note, Touratech generally is VERY expensive so the price on their website might be correct.

Planning on using the bivvy/Tarp combination more in winter, will still use the tarp in summer when it rains more. Testing it out in March as I want to take it on the GT

Meanwhile I just got a cheap Adtrek bivvy bag from Amazon UK - weighs 290g, cost about R200, and has a full length zip! Going to test it out this weekend - if when there are drips in the cave.

Got a Black Diamond "cheap" (R3k) bivvy last year - it is absolutely terrible, and weighs more than the one I just got from the UK, and doesn't even have a full length zip. Both are 0% breathable - but at least a zip can be left at least partially open to make the cheap one partly breathable.

Anyone tried those military issue overrun bivvy bags you can get from Amazon? Triple layer Gortek, although heavy at 1kg each. Should be pretty warm, so you could probably use a light sleeping bag with it.

Disclosure: I am in no way affiliated to Black Diamond, Adtrek or Amazon.

There is a good thread on bivi bags here:
www.vertical-endeavour.com/forum/44-gear/295-bivvy-bags.html?limitstart=0

I have the Bibler Hooped bivy. So breathable. Black Diamond did buy them over but mine is sweet. I actually wrote an article on it once but never posted it.

Just been checking out the MSR Hubba Hubba, seems like an awesome tent, 2-man, but light enough to carry solo easily..
I wonder how warranties/repairs would be in SA..
