Is this just bad propaganda or is there truth in the matter ?

The incident started in the Long Tom Pass and ended near Barbeton.

The link you posted Spykid appears to be to a neo-Nazi type fascist website - my browser warned me about the site also.. I also heard about this incident a few years ago near the Panorama route.

Just heard from Kevin at Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge about a group that was raided at the Tugela last night (21st). Apparently cut the tent and stole some bags. I will try and get more details when next I speak to Kevin.

I came across this group on April 22nd. We were walking north to Cathedral Peak when I ran into them on top of the first little ridge right behind the MCSA hut. I had a brief chat with them. They were 8 people coming from England. Their plan was to do an 11-day Grand Traverse but they had to turn back after being raided the night before (21st). They said it happened around 1am. Gone were 1 backpack and 1 pair of boots, among other things. They didn't camp by the Tugela Falls but by the Kubedu River. They showed me the exact spot on the map (Drakensberg hiking map no. 1) and it pretty much same latitude as Icidi Pass. In my opinion they camped in the wrong spot due to lack of knowledge, too many Basotho Kraals around them, and should have tented closer to the escarpment instead.

I’ll try to get hold of them. I should be able to get their numbers from the Mountain Register. It would be good if they could tell us the exact details.

The MBC received this private message on its Facebook page regarding an incident last weekend near the Rhino. I have witheld the names of those concerned although they were given:

"Hi, just to let the club know to maybe make members aware of the problem on Rhino Peak. My daughter ****** was hiking with scouts there yesterday, and on the way down towards the pass (coming off Rhino Peak), there were accosted by six Basotho men asking for money. The scouts started running away and the men chased them and threw stones at them, one of which hit one of the scouts. My daughter fell and bruised and cut herself, hurting her knee in the fall, but otherwise they were unharmed. I heard from my brother-in-law who visited Drak Gardens recently that this has been a regular problem of late. Maybe this info can be confirmed and shared with the club in the newsletter".

Eish, I'm off there this weekend!
Any idea when this was? Hoping the colder weather & snow have sent them cowering to lower ground

Oh great, the issue on Rhino is raising it's ugly head again!

My sympathies to the group of girls who had to go through that experience.

For anyone new to the Berg and/or this forum, please note that Mashai Pass/Rhino area does have a recent history of shepherds who are very intimidating and forceful for handouts up there. There was a particularly troubling (and controversial) incident in Dec 2010. Please see previous Berg Alert threads for details.

Not every shepherd up there is responsible for this kind of thing, and if you encounter them there it doesn't mean you will necessarily have the same experience. I was up there in January this year, and encountered a number of them who showed friendly behaviour and even posed for photographs. However, be very alert and vigilant when going there. As much as possible, exude confidence to them in your voice and body language, not letting yourself be intimidated by any shouting and demands for handouts. Be very firm but polite with them. I believe showing them this kind of confidence can help in keeping them on the back-foot.

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

Good points.
Also the guys who will attempt anything are more opportunistic than anything else. If they see a group of young kids/girls they will be a lot more brazen.
A mixed group or a group of men they wont try anything unless they looking for a bruising.

Preparation of your group is key when heading out to any area, berg or otherwise. Stay calm. Don't run. Let the leader do the talking. Be polite and firm.

Very unfortunate and very glad to hear that nothing serious happened.
The biggest thing that bugs me is those kids/girls/young people will develop a bad impression of the berg. When really in my 20+ years of hiking in the berg I've never had a dangerous encounter. So sad!

I agree. Unless they had prior knowledge of hike plans it must be opportunistic. It may just be a case of surveying areas for soft targets over weekends and holidays.

Odds are that the Berg is safer than a city like JHB. A couple of years ago I got attacked by a gang in Mooi Street. As it is I have started carrying a small pepper spray canister with me (even on hikes) to even the odds though.

Very unfortunate indeed.
This is one of the reasons I am strongly against handouts or giving of sweets or anything else. Unless it is in the form of a trade, like for a photo or information etc.
