@ghaz: I dont recall exactly how the connection looks from the escarpment onto that knife ridge, but I do remember domsmooth, who was with on that occasion, being concerned about it too when we go there but it turned out to be fine. Somewhere there is a route.
@smurfatefrog: that aspect shows the route that I did. The gully is hidden from this angle.
Firefox isn't working for me either as far as attachments go. Chrome and IE 9 are working though. Sorry guys, bear with me, this should get fixed with the upgrade.

Ok - it all makes sense now. Should be a very scenic pass and that knife ridge should be a bonus. The view looking down at it from Thumb Spur was really cool, so it should be quite something...
Any way, I have put together a rough GPS track with some assistance from GE, I am pretty sure I know the route - now the fun part, doing the pass...
Hopefully the upgrade will be through by the time I post a report on the hike. Didn't like Chrome when I last used it, and on principle I never use IE

I dug up some old, non-digital photos of that trip. There isn't anything particularly useful, though I did notice I have a shot looking onto the Thumb and the narrow ridge taken from the escarpment from a northerly aspect, perhaps 50m beyond. This tells me that the access onto this ridge is probably there and that it angles across to the Thumb. This clue may help you in finding your way up to the escarpment.

That would be a great help, thanks
I see attachments are working again on Firefox. Is this gully the one you take from the knife ridge to the top?
The photo was taken on my old 8 megapixel camera and was a photo of a large area, hence the lack of clarity.

Yes that might be it, or something similar. I can remember certain sections pretty clearly, but not that part.

Ok - well as long as its easy to find I'm happy. It was clear enough for you to find a way up 14 years ago, so unless a Tseketseke/Xeni flood has messed it up since we should be fine.
Assuming all goes well I'll post a blog entry with a description, rating etc. I'll also post some of the photos I take. Should get about 100 pics of the pass

These are two photos from my trip (which was actually dated May 1997) which are the most helpful. The first shows that view from the escarpment onto the ridge and The Thumb. This is probably were the connection from the escarpment lies. The second is taken on the ridge looking towards the Thumb. The route of the pass from below is roughly where the shot was taken from (or further behind) coming up from the left.

That's roughly what I expected - same angle etc. Good to know that I seem to be on the right track.
Out of interest, what is the climb up the Thumb like? From looking at the pics I have of it from various angles it looks like 2 pitches, both looking tough. But from your photo on the left it looks like there is a C/D grade scramble through the bottom rock band near the gap between the Thumb and the Thumb Knife. I assume you'd follow the V-shaped darker line up to the top from there - it looks very exposed though.

Thanks Kliktrak!
Sad not to have you on the team though - hopefully next time
Ps. Is the use of a Thumbs Up smilie deliberate, especially seeing as we're going up Thumb Pass
