The trip is on track for 1-3 June. So far we're a group of 6, and so we're intending to head out into the Tseketseke area using the hut as a base. We're intending to do a day trip up Tseke Pass too and are keen to see the flood damage.

Any last minute takers for the trip this weekend, let me know.

Everything is on track, our bush knives are sharpened and we may even do one or two improvements to Tseke Hut!

I wish I could come, but I am on an urgent job till Friday this week :(

On the bright side I will be in the Berg this weekend, heading up Langies and down North Jarding as a day hike, should be fun - and a long write up should be posted soon thereafter :)

What a pleasure the trip was! Thanks to everyone who made it happen.

@diverian and @whitchiwoo: thank you for your continued commitment towards pine eradication in the Berg and to VE.

@tonymarshall: thanks for joining us and for your very handy skills in fixing the hut.

@ClimbyKel: thanks for being a sport about chopping pines, even though its an unforgivable sin in your own country.

We have come up with the concept of the "Lasher Cup". Lasher being the brand for tools (bow saws and bush knives amongst other things). Every trip will have a Lasher Cup award. This time the award goes to TonyMarshall. It was his first pine-chopping trip and he had to work hard even for his first tree (very steep scrambling to access it and then it had a burnt trunk which makes it much harder to ring-bark  ). His skills in fixing the hut where also really handy. So well done.

More details to follow.

Well done for an effort above and beyond the call of duty.
I don't want to put a damper on this but have you told KZN Wildlife what you are doing, or obtained their permission. Despite these being invasive alien plants the bureaucrats behind the desks may see the cutting down of trees in a World Heritage Site by enthusiastic outsiders in a different light. They are severely twitchy at the moment over the via ferrata issue at Beacon Buttress. A phone call to the local ranger would probably be all that is needed.
I am not an expert in trees but have eliminated several unwanted aliens in my back yard. Cutting them down is heavy manual labour and with pine trees may just help to spread the seeds further. If you use a portable rechargeable drill with say a half inch or larger bit, and drill a hole diagonally downward in to the wood of the trunk, then pour some concentrated Roundup (Glyphosate) herbicide in to the hole, the tree is doomed and with much less work, and hopefully won't spread too many seeds before it dies. Glyphosate herbicides will decompose naturally to harmless substances, ie. they won't stay in the environment for long. Who carries the drill and bottle of Roundup is maybe the biggest problem.

Thanks Bobby.

This is being done in full co-operation with KZN Wildlife. They are very aware of what we do and there is communication about everything. Even what we did on the hut was done with consultation and approval prior to the time. We have a good relationship with them and also did meet up with the Conservation Manager of Cathedral Peak when we finished our trip yesterday. Both the area and regional managers get full reports of what we do in these cases.

We cannot use poisons. It gets into the water, which, besides being an issue for hikers drinking it, is a major consideration within a wilderness area. For the most part, mechanical means are effective in killing pines, but we have to monitor the sites because some can regrow and saplings do spring up. We totally cut down over 200 trees on the weekend. The bigger ones do take time to die from the ring-barking and unfortunately the mother trees that typically are at the centre of the clusters, fall into this category. We simply have to monitor them.
