I have heard of a party that accidentally went down a gully somewhere between Xeni Peak and Cockade. A huge waterfall necessitated backtracking all the way to the top. Yuk. Which of course is all the incentive I needed to find a way down. The target was an obvious gully leading off the escarpment between Xeni Peak and Elephant. Which is probably the gully used in the story above.
While I was heading up Xeni Pass a few years back, I figured I had a trick to try out. Why drop through a waterfall if you can traverse on large ledges to the north?
I traversed out of Xeni South Fork at about 2800m along the higher grass band (Option 1). Nothing to it, although it is a little steep as you enter the gully (between Elephant and Xeni) itself. If coming down the gully, this would be the very first piece of grass on your left below the cliffs.
I missed a trick and could have traversed lower into the main bowl above the waterfall.(Option 2)
You get some really cool views looking up at the cliffs of Xeni Peak.
