Mafadi Winter Hike Report

There is also another route past the Rangers Outpost which I have done often. On the path to the ladders you take the left fork and proceed parallel to the mountain for a while then there is a path up through a gap which passes the Rangers Hut. This is the route used the most by the Rangers going from iNjasuthi to that outpost.

I used that ridge during x-berg 2014 as a quick way to get to Giants Castle. It worked really well then because this was midday in late March and it was lovely to get out of the scorching valley (thanks then to Intrepid for the beta)

But, now you have me thinking which route is best to use for a Mafadi FKT?

@Ghaz, I remember that trip pretty well, was my first Drakensberg hike. Thought Centenary hut would NEVER come..... I recently went up heartbreak hill via the proper route for the first time, realised where we went off course on THAT hike, always easy to miss the path in thick mist and without a proper track. That was probably the most tired I have ever been in my whole life... Still, fond memories (and photos) :-)

I noticed interest in the Boundary Ridge route from Injisuthi Camp to Centenary Hut. Below is the track in kml format, should open in Google Earth.

this route is approximately 13,2 km point to point, and besides the leg breaking climb at the start the rest is fairly flat and with a clear jeep track or contour path.Would make a great stretch for a trail run.

Below is a pic of chain which was sturdy and sufficient to get you up the steep bit

A picture of the wooden ladders, there were a few but all were usable.

Lastly the view back towards Injisuthi camp from the top of the ridge.

When you get to the top of the ridge you can see the old Rangers house, now looks more like a ruin or an informal settlement. We opted to steer clear as it was well off our intended route.

Hope this helps.
