Do you mean Sentinel car park, or the MCC (since you mentioned descending Fangs earlier)? I have done both before, and both are do-able in a day, though descending the pass walking to the MCC can be a longish day so watch that it doesn't run away on you. Fangs to Sentinel Car Park is best done via the inland route which I refer to as the "Khubedu Shunt" - it can be done in 8 hours or so at a steady but normal hiking pace. Interestingly enough, both routes are roughly the same distance, about 22.5km more or less.

Hi Intrepid

It will be a circular route, leaving our car at Witzieshoek. The idea is to take the scenic route for two days and then "shunt" it back to on the third, arriving at Witzieshoek in time for a hot bath and a cold beer :)

What is the camping/caving/water like at Stimela Peak? We will be carrying a tent...

Is there a GPS track for the "shunt"?

Thanks for taking the time to give input.

No caves around Stimela that I'm aware of. The closest one to the actual peak would be Mbundini Pass Cave, but that’s out of the way and not a good cave anyway. There is a river between Icidi Buttress and Stimela Peak. Its apparently called the Khohloana-Ea-Ha-Molupe :) . I usually stop there for a drink or lunch, and have found water there in winter too. In summer the stream starts closer to the Stimela Peak but now there would probably only be water further down where the valley gets bigger. You could camp there. The nice views would be up on the neck behind Stimela Peak where you flip over to Mbundini, and there is lots of flattish ground around for camping. Only thing is you would have to carry your water up there and cope with wind. From there you could follow the ridge inland going West to link up with the Khubedu Shunt - I have done this before too and its pretty straightforward. I do have tracks which I will upload when I have a gap - otherwise check the map, the route is on there.

Hi Guys

Need a little advice and tips. I’m planning a hike for 3 days 2 nights from Sentinel car park over the Easter Weekend. The idea is to stay the first night at the Tugel falls. Where to go from there for the second Night? It will be my hiking partner’s first hike up the Berg. GPS coordinates will be very helpful.

Thank You

Not a good spot to overnight - there have been various tent cuttings above the falls over the years. If you push a bit further south, over the small ridge towards the Bilanjil River (one river south of the Tugela), you should be fine.

As to what you could do for the second day - it depends on how fit you are. Ifidi Cave is always a lovely spot, but it does give you a longer walkout on day 3, and isn't far from where you will be on day 1. I am not sure on the exact distance, but I rate its about 16km from Ifidi Cave back to the car park.

16,1km if you walk to the top of Ifidi ridge, then down in a semi circle to get a view down Icidi pass and head back via the Icidi valley. A bit shorter if you go straight back via the Ifidi valley.

Hi

Thank you for the reply. I think day one we will take the long walk to Ifidi Cave and then work our way back to the car park. I’ve done a few overnight Hikes but this one will be my girlfriend’s first one.

A friend and I did overnight at the falls two years back with no incident but did some thread read ups going to avoid it and take your advice on Bilanjil River.

I wanted to do the num-num trail from the Thursday but she couldn’t get off… now it’s a mid week Oom Paul Trail for me. And I think she will enjoy the Berg much more…

Thank you again
