Hi Tiph and welcome to this forum.

Have a look through the Drakensberg Hiking section as there have been many discussions on this area. I'm sure you find much useful info there. You might want to start with this thread:

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

Welcome Tiph

You can camp anywhere in the berg (except in Royal Natal), it costs R45 a night. You can either stay in a tent, mountain hut or cave.
As for the amphitheatre, there is a hut on top but its not great, rather take a tent & find a decent spot. There have been some security issues in the past around the hut / just above Tugela falls.
Search the forum for other discussions about where exactly to camp, this has been asked quite a few times

I don't think it would answer any of your questions, but I thought it good to mention, there is a really nice book on fly-fishing in the Drakensberg; by Peter Brigg "Call of the Stream"

We camped just over the ridge from the Tugela Basin on Thursday night. The entire area right now is basically a marsh. We found a descent dryish spot. Didn't see any locals.

I am a newbie and i have not done much proper hiking previously. I am planning a hike from the Sentinel Car Park to the Escarpment, up to the Tendele Upper Camp.
Can you please advise on the distance and the time it would take. Also can you please advise of any limitations in the route for a beginner. How would you rate this hike in terms of difficulty and views. Do you have any waypoints for garmin of this route?

Hi Vinesh

Just to confirm - I think you mean - Tugela Upper Camp

Tendele Camp is at RNNP - and quite far - or are you meeting people there.

maybe a bit more detail on your planned route and how many nights/days you plan to spend on this hike, and what your end point is

ie are you going from Sentinel Car Park (near Witsieshoek hotel in Qwa Qwa , freestate), and back to Sentinel Car Park.

what hiking experience do you have eg what is the longest, highest you have hiked previously, have you ever tented overnight on the escarpment before.

If you do mean back to Tendele, that is a mission in a day!

Some pics and details on a similar route in my hike writeup "as the crow flies" .

Our planned hike starts at Sentinel Car Park up to the Tugela Falls (or a decent vantage point of the falls), via the Beacon Buttress and back to the Sentinel car park. We envisage a day hike and donot plan on tenting overnight. Our experience goes as far as a few hikes without much climbing, up to a max of 10km and i would say that we are reasonably fit to tackle more km's.

Please also advise Beacon Buttress vs Chain Ladders.

Many thanks
