Sentinel Carpark to the top of Tugela Falls (or the awesome lookout on the ridge just south of the falls) and back again is very easy and quick. You can do that in 4 hours with lots of "look at the view" stops on the way.
If people are scared of heights, the lookout point for Tugela Falls or looking down Beacon Buttress would be more scary than the chainladders. Its a nice variation to do both. I'd recommend going up Beacon Buttress and down the chainladders. With all the lose rock on the gully it isn't that great going down.

Would we be able to include the Tugela Gorge in this hike? If so, what distance and time can be added to the route.
This would mean that we start Sentinel car Park up Beacon Buttress to the Falls down the chain ladders, then to the tugela gorge and back to Sentinel Car Park.

No! The gorge is very far from there (well, not as the crow flies). It would require a full hike to Royal Natal and then back from there - roughly 55km extra!

it would be an epic day hike of note!
The problem can be summed up by the massive rock wall that is the Amphitheatre. So, as much as there is a great view of the Tugela Gorge from the top, and a great view of Tugela Falls from the gorge, its a mission to get from one to the other...

To do Tugela Gorge, drive around to RNNP and hike it, but its a long hike i think close to 15km there and back from the RNNP car park, also take alot of water with you, as you do not cross rivers/streams for most of the way.
It is a great experience to get to the top and see the tugela falls going over the high cliffs, and then also view the waterfall from the bottom at Tugela Gorge. so best is if you have 2 days to go 1 day top, 1 day bottom, you will have a fantastic experience as both expose you to spectacular scenery.

This subject was dealt with in two other threads previously. They may shed some more light on the subject for you too:
Best viewpoints for the Tugela Falls...
Northern Drakensberg hike ?
Enjoy - they are both fantastic hikes.

Hi
Myself and two friends are planning to hike to from the Sentinel car park to top of the Amphitheatre. We are then planning to spend two nights on the berg and explore the area during this time. We are planning this for the weekend of the 21st September 2013.
Can anyone please assist with the following questions:
1. I’ve heard that it is now unsafe to spend the night on top. Can anyone elaborate on this? Are the local really that much trouble?
2. Will there be enough water that time of the year?
