Hi Chappies,
There is a flat spot directly in front of the hut but not sure if you will be able to fit 5 tents in this space. Possibly, just depending on the size of the tents. Last time we were there another group also camped in the vacinity of the hut, they went a bit further along the contour path towards Judges pass and camped just off the contour path on a flattish spot, think it was about 1,5km's further North.
There is quite a bit of space in the hut as well, if the other group doesn't mind sharing some of your group can sleep on the floor perhaps? I had to sleep on the floor as the beds were too short for me (the cement floor is cold at night so remember to isolate from below).

I just saw a photo in the gallery where a number of tents were pitched on the top of the little hill directly behind Bannermans hut, say between 25 - 50m from the hut, so around the hut should be more than enough space for 5 tents

We have a hike planned next weekend, and a member of our group has booked Bannermans Hut. I am curious to know what sort of state it is in currently? Is it wise to take a tent as well?
Any information will be appreciated.

I was last there about 6 days ago, so not very current update
The hut is fine, no need to carry tents. There is a broom to sweep the place out, and you might want to leave some windows open to get some of the smell out (it is a bit stuffy in there). Make sure you carry all your rubbish out.

Hi Ingrid,
Lorinda and I had a look at Bannerman Hut in July when we went up Gypaetus Pass and descended Judge Pass. It was clean and quite usable, and the roof completely intact. The bunk beds are also usable. People seem to have a tendency to leave litter there though, and there is a collection of old bottles and packets of various rubbish in the toilet and kitchen area, although this doesn't really affect using the hut. There is also a broom in the hut, an excellent idea in my opinion, as you can sweep all the dust out and clean up the sleeping area if the door gets left open and dirt blows into the hut.
Edit : ghaznavid answered while I was writing my post.

Thanks Guys. Much appreciated.
The fact that there is a roof and door is very reassuring! Beds are a luxury! Any chance that there are mattresses on the beds? Also Ghaz, how was the water situation there 6 days ago?

If there ever were mattresses, I am guessing they made their way up Bannerman Pass at some point in history. The bunk beds are just masonite slabs on metal frames - but entirely adequate once an air mattress has been placed on them.
The Martial Eagle Stream is basically flowing at 2200m year-round, so no stress there. Just remember to fill up above the hut - I have been sick at this hut before, and I usually blame water contamination...

Got it. Take a air mattress, drink water above hut.
Thank you so much! Looking forward to the trip!
