Is it possible to book caves in the Cathedral Peak area online?
Its possible for the Injisuthi area - but I don't see any caves for the CP area using the same system.
Have I missed something?
Thanks

Where do you book Injisuthi online?

Here is the URL:
bookings.kznwildlife.com/MakeABooking.aspx
If you select Injisuthi as the resort and check availability for certain dates, LIC, grndstne, WV, UIC and MB caves all show up.

I suspect the case is that only caves which historically have been bookable through KZN Wildlife HQ in Maritzburg have been added to the online system. This was the case for Injisuthi's cave bookings, and you always had to arrange for payment along with the booking. Cathedral Peak has managed it's own cave bookings in a more informal way and you only pay when you get there, and this continues to this day. Possibly the intention is to add more caves to the system with time.

So, Intrepid, does this mean you can phone Cathedral Peak to make the bookings? If so, then the reason you can't do this for Injisuthi - and therefore can book online - is that the phone line to the camp itself doesn't work regularly enough for the system to be viable.

I've often wondered why Injisuthi did things in this way - not sure myself. I should actually ask them. Yes, you can phone Cathedral Peak and book caves which are on their list. They just take your name and telephone number. Several of the others also work this way.

Hi all,
just found the forums
How does one go about booking caves in the berg ?
I've tried the kznwildlife website but they only seem to have Injusuthi listed. I would like to take a bunch of teenagers up to experience sleeping in a cave. My problem is one of them is terrified of heights and I'd have to find a cave in a valley or somewhere relatively flat to hike to. Do you have any suggestions? We have 7-9 ppl joining us.
Close locality to water and somewhere for them to swim would be great as well.
we have stayed at Lower Injusuthi before so would like to go somewhere else.
Finally we are from JHB so somewhere northern or central berg would suite us well.
thanks
Si

Welcome Si
The best way to book is to call the relevant KZN Wildlife office where you are hiking from, details are in here www.vertical-endeavour.com/forum/14-drakensberg-general/55714-access-roads-to-the-drakensberg.html
As for caves, the best non-southern Berg area for caves (besides Injisuthi) is Didima/Cathedral Peak region. You can check detail out here www.berg.co.za/cavesindex.htm

To book caves, phone the relevant EKZN offices. They ask for your name and phone number. Takes about 5 minutes.
Too bad you can't head up the chain ladders - Crows Nest Cave is a nice one, and much closer when coming from JHB. IMO the best Small Berg caves are in the Southern Berg and, as Smurf mentioned, Injisuthi. Highmoor (near Giant's Castle) has some nice easy to get to caves as well.
