Do you mean safety, as in which caves are unsafe in summer when rivers are in flood, or safety as in security, where your gear might get stolen if you leave it unattended? If you have questions about a specific cave, post your question in the official thread for that cave, or start one if it doesn't exist. For broader discussion touching on several caves you could just start a new thread - but do check all the threads to see if something has maybe been started already. Security topics are generally better posted in the Drakensberg Security category. If it's more about caves, post your questions under the caves category, if its more about security then in that category.

I meant safety, as in security. I will look on the official thread for the caves concerned or I will start a new thread if it does not exist. Thank you.

I couldn’t reach Didima at Cathedral Peak (Feb 2025) for cave bookings on the landline in the previous post. This cell number did work though:
072 3977901

HI all
I have hiked many times and found people in the cave i have booked. Happy to share. However how does one book a hut and ensure its not double booked.? This can be frustrating. Is there any rules or hiking tour groups that take precedent, even though the hut can be booked?
What should we expect to do if we book and find others there.....kick them out?

Double bookings are very common, it happened on our last trip at Bannermans hut. What the person on the other end of the line at the camp told me is that, if a hut can say sleep 8 and only 2 people booked, then they will often allocate the other 6 spots to oher people.
Double bookings are a part of berg hiking, and wether we like it or not, it will continiue to happen. Hut/cave etiquette is another matter altogether, but I think the only way to ensure you have a sleeping spot ony for yourself (or your group), guaranteed, is to take your own shelter along.

Thanks and the capacity makes sense.
Agreed on own shelter too.
I trust all hiking groups or specifically TOUR guides (if on the forum) are courteous that they have NO more rights than any one who books a cave, be it through a wrong/differing office.
What would be great is some form of proof to device or print out that removes ambiguity.
Main rule - be a good oe to others in the event. (which can be tough for tour guides when their guest's expectations are to have a 'cosy setup' as promised or even paid for)

I do stand corrected here but I have asked Busi at Giants Castle that if I book the Bannerman hut for say 3 people do they book the rest of the hut out to another group and she said no they dont. The same with caves, I can confirm that it's the same at Injisuthi where you can only book online. the problem is that people dont know about the online booking at Injisuthi and then just picth up at the cave as they could not find it online or think its avalable because they dont know any better.
I do think that the people who did not book it should give the people who booked first option - and I have also mentioned it to KZN-Wildlife that they should make all cove booking online as with Injisuthi but I guess there will be no perfect system.
