I wonder, is suctioning recommended for all snake bites?
If there is an herpetologist, or venomologist(?) around, perhaps they could tell us, or else I could find out from an Herpetologist acquaintance, if anyone is interested?

With the research I have done, not all bites are safe for suction. Although I am not sure at the moment which and why.

Papa D that would be great to know

I know a local herpetologist, or venomologist,(I know he harvests venom for anti venom, not sure on the name either) he has a practice here in Nelspruit. I will get information from him and post his understanding.

It seems that the idea that suction can be effective in treating snake bites is nothing but a myth:

Sucking out venom, either by mouth or with a pump, does not work and may harm the affected area directly.[44] Suction started after three minutes removes a clinically insignificant quantity—less than one-thousandth of the venom injected—as shown in a human study.[45] In a study with pigs, suction not only caused no improvement but led to necrosis in the suctioned area.[46] Suctioning by mouth presents a risk of further poisoning through the mouth's mucous tissues.[47] The well-meaning family member or friend may also release bacteria into the person's wound, leading to infection.

I'll ask my guy, and post his reply too. I'll also ask him about pressure bandages.

Guys, would we be interested in a talk on snakes, and emergency treatment, by Pat McKrill?

This would be in the KZN area, as he resides in Cato Ridge. I could possibly get a venue like Camperdown Club, at very nominal charge, and he would charge a fee to cover his costs.

Camperdown Club is 25 km from PMB city centre, and 60 km from DBN city centre. So this would obviously suit KZN Midlands/Highway/Durban residents. Cash bar and snacks would be available from the club.

I know that he always has a good number of snakes on hand, so this would probably be a very interesting demo.

I would add that I have nothing to gain from this financially, but would be prepared to arrange it if there is enough support.

Please let me know if you may be interested, and what you think may be a fair cost to pay to him, probably a rate per head?

Also, if interested, some feedback as to what evening? or time? might suit the best?

Let me know, and I'll take it from there

Cheers
Papa D

22nd and 23rd January 2016.
Coming down Ships Prow, we encountered three Skaapsteekers (we think) or grass snakes. They were to fast to ID, slender and pale olive green and brown??
Once on the contour path towards Blind Mans corner on two seperate occasions we had the privilege of finding beautiful Berg Adders.
The first was undoubtedly the biggest I've ever seen, nothing under 50cm with a good girth. The second was a baby and in a bad mood.
My trail buddy and photographer Heinrich managed to get in a few macro shots. It proved difficult to take pic's as the grass was tall and wet.
The first three pics were the big boy and the last two are of the baby.
Enjoy
