Snake Sightings

An interesting visitor (a Red-lipped Herald) joined us one night recently in Aasvoëlkrantz Cave. Although we managed to move it back to the river area, my daughter found a shed skin near her bed the next morning!

That is scary!  Not nice to wake up to a shed skin!

We also found a small shed skin in Aasvoëlkrans on 20 Dec (in the sleeping area to right of middle rocks, if facing rear of cave).

Last week I had a close encounter with a rather large specimen of what I'm sure was a Rinkals. As I was descending the hill behind Cyprus Cave I noticed a movement at my feet. As I moved to the side the snake slithered away from me and then froze, observing me with slightly lifted head. This allowed me to take a reasonable photo before it rapidly slithered away. A really beautiful creature.

The biggest Rinkals I have ever seen right in the path. Gave it as much space as fast as possible and "she" moved off just as quick.
1m long comfortably with about 75mm daimeter body and a 120-140mm hood.
Sorry no picture as too busy shunting everyone else behind me into reverse to take a picture.
