How safe is it to tie 2 hiking ropes together, surely that can't be safe?

Thanks ghaznavid. Today has started off bad and got worse ito available time. I will upload a pic tomorrow. Encounters with the Dragon has also got some nice images of spires in the one chapter.

It is normal to tie two 50m ropes together when abseiling. When pulling the ropes down you have to remember which side the knot is on. If you pull the wrong rope, then the knot gets stuck in the rapp chord.

It is less usual to tie two ropes together to make one long rope. The problem here is passing the knot through the belay device when you get to half way (and probably retrieving the ropes).

The tension on one of the tied ropes (say the bottom one) is much the same as the tension on the top rope and if it is hanging free, then the tension will be the same.

Where in the world is Serious Tribe? Sadly the image is not up to my normal quality as I had to hold the slide up to the light, and shoot it with a digital slr and then sharpen like mad to get it ok. It will suffice though.

My first guess is overlooking the Mitre from the Bell Traverse somewhere, possibly from the slopes of the Twins?

Ah crap it better not be Monk's Cowl from the vicinity of Cowl Cave since I was there just 3 months ago...

Since Monk's Cowl is already taken and Cowl Cave is in the side of Champagne, I'm going with the rock face of Champagne Castle
