State of the road to Injisuthi

That is horrible. Good to hear you guys got away unharmed.

When I went to Injisuthi the first time, some kids closed one of the gates and refused to open it if we didn't pay them. A very angry Fitness threatened them and they quickly opened up and let us through - but still not fun.

There are a few spots on that road where an ambush would be easy to set up, and there is no shortage of rocks to throw at the cars or people if they get out. This is the main reason that I have only been there twice.

We had a similar experience but our doors were locked - the joys of auto locking Toyota... Certainly something to be watchful about.

Hi everyone.

Just a quick question, has anyone recently made a trip on the road to Injisuthi? Going camping and day hiking there next weekend and just want to make sure that our small Nissan Micra can get the job done?

Thank you.

Andreas, best to phone the office and ask about the road conditions. We were there in April and the road was in reasonable condition, but then I had 220mm of clearance so wasn't too concerned about the road. Your Micra is quite low and front wheel drive, which could be a problem if the road is wet. So you will probably be able to get to the campsite, but getting out might be a problem in inclement weather. However, you can always take a towrope along and ask one of the 4x4's to pull you out.

Was there during the August long weekend. The dirt parts of the road is in a fair condition, however the "tar" road is riddled with deep potholes, we had a hard time dodging them even driving a SUV. There was several small cars at the hiking parking however, so I think taking it very slowly and picking the correct line, will get you there. But as RiaanG already mentioned, best to contact them directly and confirm.

Hi Riaang and Vivo101.

Thank you for the replies. Called their office and they said they highly recommend a high clearance vehicle but still have small cars that come through often so should be able to do it.

Just do the tar section slowly and carefully, and the dust section is ok if it is not muddy.  Again, drive at a speed that suites the road condition...even if you are in a hurry to get to the campsite.  Just leave 20 minutes earlier :-)

Thank you for the good advise.

Road wasn't as bad as I had expected (please read still pretty bad), maybe it was because it wasn't raining when we drove it, maybe it's because I'm used to farm roads, but taking it easy was the best advice. I assume some of the massive potholes (driving towards camp site when past the gate that gets closed at night) have been filled with stones that made a couple of potholes mush easier. Saw a few other small cars at the camp site as well and will definitely be back in the future even with our small little car.

Amazing place!
