Sleeping Bags
Unfortunately we are very limited in SA for choice of materials for MYOG.
We are not able to source Climashield or Apex, as far as I know.
I have used 42gsm ripstop nylon, and 750fp down, and will do so for my next bag as well.
Would still like some feedback on experiences with wet sleeping bags, down or synthetic.
For example, after a heavy storm the night before, the tent walls had quite a bit of condensation on the inside, my quilt had not got wet in the storm though. Unfortunately, a fair bit of this condensation inadvertently got onto the quilt the following morning. I towelled off as much as I could. This being the last day of the hike, I did not dry out the bag en route, and packed it away as it was. I opened it out to air and dry as soon as I got home, and I don't remember that there was any difference it the "feel" of the bag. Granted, it wasn't a lot of water.
Cheers

I think that extrem textil can forward to RSA, I have already bought books and maps from your country, it is not too expensive by regular airmailPapa Dragon wrote: we are very limited in SA for choice of materials for MYOG.

I've searched far and wide in SA for a bag which is both light, compact, affordable and provides enough warmth (coupled with a thermalite liner) for a 5 day GT at the end of April. This is the closest I have found so far... Outdoor warehouse is running a special on them for R950. Any comments or advice appreciated.
Thanks!

I played with it during design phase. Pretty good and you get exactly what they quote. At R950 I reckon it's a good buy.jeremyeb wrote: Has anyone used a First Ascent Amplify 900 and have any comments on it?

I bought the same bag about a year or so ago and tested it last winter. I would not call it a 2 degree bag, more in the line of 5 degrees. It's relatively light at 919g (without the stuff sack that you don't need).
My opinion, I think with this bag you'll be pushing it for a GT at the end of April. Would recommend a 0 degree bag coupled with enough warm clothes to get in your bag at night and just get out the next morning without any excess faff.
(Completed a 8day, 1hour GT this Monday) My -5 degree down bag was way too warm(weather forecast looked very cold), friend in 0 degree synthetic bag slept with warm clothes and was comfortably warm)(Warm clothes- thick socks, thermal bottom and top, thin fleece, thin down jacket, apple jacket vibes and a beanie)

The MHW Pinhole is a better buy on Mountainmailorder.co.za
+1 for the MHW sleeping bag (if you have the funds). MMO have the Lamina20 in stock and on sale, which is the newer version of the Pinole. However, even on sale its R2010 (free delivery), and secondly if you're over 6' (182cm) tall it will be too short. I know because I'm 186cm & tried one for size. And they don't have the Long version in stock. Also, don't be misled into thinking that the Laminina20 (Long) will solve that problem, because the MHW women-specific sleeping-bags are smaller than their unisex ones and the Laminina (Long) is actually the same length as the Lamina (Regular).
Still think Papa Dragon's K-Way extreme lite is a good option if your funds are limited.
Hope this helps...
