I have been using a Pinole for ages, and used my Lamina 20 this last weekend. I have also used a Hyperlamina 0 (-14C bag) - all have been great. I really enjoy MHW gear.

Many thanks for the advice guys - I bought the amplify 900 last week before receiving further advice, but at R950 still a useful buy, even if it's not gonna be warm enough for a GT this month. Still to test it out but will hopefully do so in the next week or so.

Will look into the suggested MH options as well.
@Papa Dragon I was very tempted by your bag as well (especially the weight), but the reviews seemed to suggest it is more of a 5C to 10C bag?

If the forecast is looking a little chilly for our GT I may even take my ice breaker and save weight in other areas :)

I have use a Amplyfy 900 together with a liner recently on two trips to the escarpment, one time was nice and warm but the second time in a freezing heavy wind i was a bit cold, but for the weight and packed size it was some thing i could live with. Good value for money but would go for the next one up next time.

The main question is whether its a long term upgrade or not. You'll find with some south African bags (especially the icebreaker) that you are paying a lot of money for a bag that isn't really that good and generally weighs a lot more than international bags. If your willing to spend the extra bucks for a good sleeping bag, the two best brands would be the north face for down bags, and mountain hardware for EXTREMELY good synthetic bags (personally I would go for mountain hardware). These have very good comfort ratings and are lighter than most other brands..... Hope anyone found this helpful.... :)

I am happy to say that the Mountain Hardware Lamina 20 and Laminina 20 are properly awesome synthetic bags. We used them over 26 - 29 April at 1200m, 2100m and 3100m and they were snuggly warm, usable and generally excellent bags. Highly recommended for trips where the temps are above -7. I reckon with a liner, these would go year-round in the berg.

Has anyone had any experience with the Vango and North Face bags sold by Trappers? Or with the Deuter Orbit?

I have a The North Face blue kazoo that I bought from Due South, and I've been very happy with it both in terms of quality and warmth. I tend to sleep quite cold, but the blue kazoo has always kept me toasty warm :)

Thanks ruthtbl. That Blue Kazoo ain't cheap though. Those Mountain Hardware bags are getting harder and harder to avoid.
