Was doing some reading on tent fabrics and came across this handy technical guide on buying backpacking tents:

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

So I got my first hiking tent (Outdoor Warehouse sale) the 360 Cool Mountain 2.
My question is, how do you pack this into your backpack?

I rate the Cool Mountain 2 as the best value for money tent on the market right now. Mine is just over 2 years old, has survived a few hail storms and still works great.

What I do is take the pegs out and put them in the side pouches of the pack, poles go on the side of the inside of the main pack compartment, outer sheet comes out of the pack and gets stuffed into a gap and the inner part is kept in the orange bag and stuffed into the main part of the pack. That's the only way I manage to get my full tent, sleeping bag and ground mat into my pack.

Ps. usually part of my tent is in someone else's pack. That extra kg of not sharing a tent makes a big difference...

Great tent, I'd love to have one. I have the Trek 2 (not sold anymore). I put the poles in the main compartment, and stuff everything else in a plastic compressible dry bag (TeVo Travel Vac Pac) and put that either at the bottom of the main compartment or in bottom compartment, depends what else is in the pack. I leave the bag it comes in at home.

Lately I've managed to get my Trail -5 sleeping bag and this tent inside my 60L pack, it takes a bit of compression & squashing but it can be done as long as you not taking too much other stuff. I leave the tent as is, don't separate parts

I put my sleeping bag flat at the bottom, then stand the tent up at an angle and pack everything else around it

Has anyone tried the 360 degrees Lightweight 2 hiking tent? According to Sportsmans Warehouse they are "for hiking enthusiasts who push the limits and opt for the more extreme South African conditions." It is a good price and is very light! (1.8kg). I want to take it on the Grand traverse in September and not sure if it is suitable for that kind of South African extreme? Any ideas or advice? Thanks :)

I don't have one, but have seen a few in the field. Its a good tent, lightweight. I have personally turned it down for 'Berg trips, I wouldn't trust it in bad weather (wind, snow etc).
