I planned to do a loop that goes up Jarateng and down Giants Pass, so these points mentioned are on the opposite direction where I would like to go.
In August 22, we bumped 4 herdsman up in the valley between Langalibalele and Jarateng. All but one seemed to mind their own business.
ok thx. what about camping in the Jarateng valley up in the escarpment? It is safe following the usual precautions (stay hidden, set up late)? Or is it dangerous because is close to Giants Pass?Hello, the Jarateng Passes are not known smugglers routes, and any use of these by smugglers would be very rare.
If it was me, Bannermans cave to the north is a safe bet, alternatively climb Mt Durnford and tent around Katana.
But, thanks for the suggestions and info.

I've used this little flat spot close to a river with no problems.

There is also a nice little sheltered ledge. great spot for a 1 person tent if you're brave enough.

If it's the Jareteng pass between Potterill and Mt Durnford, I believe the Katana area will be enroute as you head south to Giants pass.

Thx for the suggestions. I will take a look for the spot close to the river, the point close to the edge it is not for me

I slept in Central Jarding Cave (the obvious one) in September 2021. Someone had definitely taken animals down to the cave and slept there; there were clear tracks and dung. But as Tony says, it is not a known smuggling route.

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

Thanks for this detail. I have updated the use-by-locals index of this pass to "minor" accordingly. Perhaps we can't say with certainty which of the three passes was used, but at least marking one of them as such gives readers an indication that there is occasional activity in the area. Updates and observations from members are encouraged!I slept in Central Jarding Cave (the obvious one) in September 2021. what would be the correct thing to do if you are in the cave first before dark and locals arrive with animals?
