i have a garmin etrex 10 which is an old one and cant connect it to laptop to download

is it possible to get co ordinates for keith bush camp?
and then any significant co ordnates for actual grays pass itself such as any important waypoints ie turns, nkozazanas cave etc good overnight spot to camp etc
thanks[/quote]

Hi Ivan.

Disclaimer, I'm by no means a GPS or navigational expert and I haven't hiked Grays before. I just imported the GPS track of Grays pass (from "Downloads" link to your right on the screen) into Google Earth and had the mouse pointer (should take you close enough to actual coordinate) over Keith Bush Camp and the top of Grays Pass. Can read coordinates on the bottom gray ribbons of the 2x attached photo's (Click on the "i" below and it should open up in a new screen). Just make sure the Datum is the same on your GPS.

Grays Pass Top

Keith Bush Camp

Hope that helps.

Although you already have what you need, also check out what Andrew Porter did as you may find this info very helpful:

A screenshot from his maps, very good stuff:

As a side note, there are many articles on how to connect older Garmins to a computer. Randomly searching, this may work, mounting it as a usable disc. Youtube also has.

@Terrydrum: We are a group of 18 guys going up Grays pass this weekend. Also sleeping over at KBC on Friday night, then up Grays pass Sat sleeping over at the top next to the river. Don't cancel your escarpment sleepover because of security concerns, looks like the bigger concern on Saturday night is going to be find sufficient flat spots for everyone to have a good nights rest :-)

@Ivan: Go to the downloads section on this website, there are tons of coordinates, tracks, waypoints etc for passes, passheads, caves, camping spots, important crossing points as per the official maps etc.

I think you'll find 18 names do not fit onto one hike register....

Hi Riaan, you do know the maximum numbers in a hiking party is set to 12 for a reason right?

What are the reasons? I’m just curious.

"Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife (EKZNW), as the managing authority of the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park World Heritage Site (UDP), is concerned about the physical impact of large hiking parties in wilderness areas of the Park. EKZNW has long been insisting that hiking parties number no less than four for safety reasons, and is now recommending that the maximum limit be 12 hikers. EKZNW therefore requests members of the public who are planning large group excursions into the UDP to restrict the size of these groups to no more than 12 members, and asks that the organiser liaise with the EKZNW conservation manager of the area in which they propose to hike. Larger parties should separate into groups of no more than 12 and hike in different directions or areas. A party larger than12 members has an unacceptably heavy physical impact, as well as having a visual impact with regard to the number of tents, disturbed ground as well as solid and liquid waste."

Hi there

This might be a long shot but I'm hoping one of the members on VE can help. My husband did a solo hike up Grays Pass on this long weekend. He ascended on Saturday the 28th and met a group that were camping on the escarpment just before sunset. He spent about 10 minutes talking to them and unfortunately didn't get any of their names. He would like to get in touch with the leader of that group.
My husbands the one that didn't take any photos and headed back down as it got dark.

Thanks
