So Mountain Forecast has 8cm of snow on Saturday night on Mafadi. Yr.no briefly removed the snow forecast yesterday, but it is back now. So I guess odds of there actually being snow this weekend are fairly high.
Has 2018 been a particularly good year for snow, or is it just that I keep picking snow weekends to go hiking

Speaking under correction, but as far as I know it is La Nina at the moment, so we can expect good snow for the next year or two, and some cooler, rainier summers (as opposed to the El Nino droughts).Has 2018 been a particularly good year for snow, or is it just that I keep picking snow weekends to go hiking

A late cold front will be passing over the Drakensberg from tomorrow morning, bringing a sharp drop in temperatures as well as snow to the peaks and possibly even into some high lying parts of the KZN midlands.
The snow accumulation map from snow-forecast.com suggests that most of the escarpment can expect 10cm+ to fall:

Today's Terra satellite image reveals just what large snowfall this turned out to be! The entire escarpment received a good covering, with the snowline extending as low as 2000m in the Central to Southern parts. Due to it being so late the year, the melt is likely to be fairly rapid though.

Another round of light to moderate snow is expected to fall this afternoon/evening over the Southern and Central escarpment above 3000m:
There is also a chance of some further high elevation snowfalls on Saturday, will give an update a little closer to the time.

The Wednesday snowfall either didn't occur at all, or was too light to leave any evidence.
For the time being there is still some snow forecast to fall this Saturday above 3000m in places, but this is expected to be very light (+ - 2cm)
