The Pine Tree Project
Leaving Monk's Cowl/Drak Sun/Culfargie at about 8am on Saturday 19 March. Easy walk in up Jacob's Ladder to the overnight, which will be one of the caves, still to be determined, depending on numbers, water etc. Recce that afternoon, and set plans for following day.
Work on some pines on Sunday, possibly climbing Vaalribbokkop on Sunday afternoon.
Easy walk out on Monday, which is a Public Holiday, and return to cars.
Like I said in another post, work is at your own pace, no pressure at all.
Come and join in for a fun hike, whilst doing something very worthwhile for our 'Berg.
It would be great if we could get a group of about 6 or more.
Let me know.

Pine tree working hike on the long weekend in March.
We will be going up Jacob's Ladder on Saturday 19th March, to Vaalribbokkop Cave. Relatively easy hike. Will stay over for 2 nights in Vaalribbokkop Cave, and do work on the pines in the surrounding area. Return on Monday 21st March, a public holiday.
With the approval and assistance of the EKZNW Conservation Manager for the area.
Although this is a working hike, it is also great fun and work is at your own pace.
We already have a fair sized group, but space for 2 more.
PM if interested.

In 2015 we literally still treated hundreds of saplings which had sprung up after the initial treatment in 2011.

In the last year or two we have noticed several of these brown pines in various places and we have been puzzled by it. In some cases it definitely was due to fire. Below is a shot of a small portion of the big cluster in the lower Tseketseke Valley, taken in 2014.
This next shot was taken in 2015. It is the exact same clump of trees, just from a different angle. Thankfully fires help the pine tree work in these cases. In some densely infested pine areas, fires can lead to soil erosion.

The map has been a long time in the making, and I thank everyone who has been involved in this work so far.

The next pine hike in the VRK area is scheduled for the 10, 11 & 12 June. Details and logistics to follow. These hikes are always great fun, chilled and relaxed.
If you would like to get involved with this work, or just go on a one-off pine hike, please contact me for VRK or diverian or tonymarshall for other areas.
Cheers

Evening guys, I have just had confirmation that the insert for 50/50, shot on the March pine hike, will be shown on next Thursday, 26 May.
Good timing, the next pine hike is on 10th to 12th June.
I'll post a reminder next week..
