The Pine Tree Project

On my recent hike to Xeni Cave, I saw a few pines on the slopes above the Xeni River as marked in the image below - one adolescent pine, perhaps, and a few younger ones:

They could be reached from either the Xeni riverbed or the other side of the ridge, on the usual approach to the contour path.

I proudly present "A Guide To Combating Alien Pine Trees In The Drakensberg", which is VE's very own manual on how to do the pine tree treatment. It is written with the aim of inspiring and empowering the public to get involved.

It can be downloaded here.

The knowledge captured in this guide has been the culmination of 5 years worth of work. It is a tribute to all who have believed in this project and contributed towards it. It all began with a few remarks posted on this forum - and with the landmark pines in the Mhlwazni that are so noticeable on the way to Keith Bush Camp. I believe we have started to make a noticeable and lasting difference, and this is a very rewarding achievement! Though am not able to be part of the trips as much as I was previously, it seems you guys will be just fine without me. I salute you, and keep those pangas sharp!

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

Good timing, the next pine hike is on 10th to 12th June.

I'll post a reminder next week..

Just bumping up, a reminder for 50/50 tomorrow evening..

I think that was pretty well put together, and you guys all spoke very well.

Notice how it is never referred to as a VE project, and the only time they ever name VE is under the names when talking to individuals. I guess it is the "avoid free advertising" mentality found on TV.

Would have been nice if they added a "this is how you get involved" kind of thing.

Never heard of VE being called social media though

Very cool insert...glad for the subtitles :P

I really liked Julie's response to why do you do it: "It's necessary"

"The three rules of mountaineering: It’s always further, taller and harder than it looks."

On that note.... ;) next pine hike in the Vaalribbokkop area is in 2 weeks time. Leaving Drak Sun carpark on Friday 10 June, time still to be determined but probably in the afternoon..

If you're keen to join on an easy, fun hike, and do some good for our 'Berg too, give me a shout.. some places left.
