I had to head up to Welkom from Durban yesterday and decided that instead of doing it in one go I'd go via the northern berg spend a night ( any excuse to go to the berg) and then drive through the next day.
The R74 from winterton through to the top of Olivierhoeks Pass is absolutely fine however it seems the Free State government see no reason to maintain there section of the R74. It was a driving experience today. One which caused many laughs and profanities.
Bottom line. If you not in a rush and have your wits about you it's a doable road. Would never attempt it in the dark.
Just my 5cents worth

The road was better than I expected this last weekend, there are maybe 10km of it that you have to go around 30km/h, as long as you accept that and go slowly you'll be ok. The other 5km you can go around 60km/h.

Contract has been awarded, work should start in the next few months, to be completed by end of 2016.

Let's hope it happens and sticks to schedule...

I wonder if this is in anticipation of the go ahead for the cable car project?

Has anyone been on the R74 via Sterkfontein/Oliviershoekpas recently?

(Will also contact Drakensville over the weekend to get their opinion on how driveable it is).

Hi Highlands Fanatic

We were on this road two weeks ago when we drove up to do the Sentinel climb with Gavin Raubenheimer. They are working on it and although you have to go slowly in places, its not bad. There was a stop and go where we had to wait for almost half an hour at the end section ( before you turn off for Harrismith) - Quite a bit of traffic on this route so people are using it more now
