I drove down and back this past weekend and the road is still as mentioned above by ghaznavid, additional to this after the pass going to Bergville they tried to mark ahead of some of the potholes with yellow paint or stripes painted across the road, but if you take it slow the R74 is ok to drive. Added some pictures below as attachments. 1. Sterkfontein section (half of the road closed), 2. Little Switserland section (dirt road section), 3. Stop and go (Dirt road bypass).

So the R74 between Winterton and up the Oliviershoek pass (the part I can report on) has had an interesting development. Wish I'd taken photos but it's not a great road to pull over on. Goes like this, in bright yellow road paint. visible from a distance...
- All scary potholes now have square frames painted around them.
- If you see a large block of paint, oh about 700x700mm, it's to draw your attention to perils to come.
- If you see two rectangles following the large black you'll meet a depression in the road.
- These depressions have chevrons painted in them.
